Silicon Valley Giants Bankroll Wisconsin's Crime Wave

Microsoft, among other coastal elites and "progressive" donors, funds pro-criminal groups in Wisconsin that weaken the criminal justice system.

Crime is skyrocketing across Wisconsin due to soft-on-crime policies pushed by progressive lawmakers. But the decline of justice doesn’t just stem from leftist policies in Madison—it traces back to the deep pockets of Silicon Valley elites.

In August, Microsoft announced a $40,000 grant to Legal Intervention for Transforming Wisconsin (LIFT) and Ex-Incarcerated People Organizing (EXPO)—two "progressive" organizations focused on freeing incarcerated criminals, overturning cash bail, restoring voting rights to felons, and erasing criminal records. The grant, part of Microsoft's Catalyst Grant Program, is administered by the Urban Institute—a leftist think tank specializing in "progressive" policy.

The grant is intended to "advance racial equity and reform in the adult criminal legal system," but similar initiatives in recent years have left law-abiding Wisconsinites in harm's way while criminals roam free.

From 2019 to 2023, Wisconsin’s crime rate increased by a staggering 14 percent under "criminal justice" reforms implemented by Democrat Gov. Tony Evers. Murder rose by 43 percent, grand theft auto by 27 percent, simple assault by 14 percent, and aggravated assault by 6 percent.

While these groups claim to work for the benefit of Wisconsinites, their "progressive" donors and policies—which place criminals above public safety—make clear their true intent: disruption.

EXPO claims to be a harmless group focused on criminal justice reform, but the group's true agenda includes eliminating cash bail, scaling back sentencing for violent offenders, and reducing incarceration regardless of risk to communities.

Wisconsin has already suffered under policies that reduce the jail population. Between 2019 and 2024, Gov. Evers expanded "earned release" and fought against strict sentencing. As a result, more than 2,000 inmates returned to the streets early. Among those released were individuals convicted of violent crimes—including armed robbery and felony firearm possession.

Approximately 40 percent of the criminals were rearrested within two years, and at least 274 of them were convicted murderers or attempted murderers, according to Wisconsin Parole Commission data.

EXPO partners with progressive think tanks and foundations that promote soft-on-crime policies designed to incentivize chaos. Its donors include the New Venture Fund, which operates under the Arabella Network "dark money" umbrella—one of the largest and most influential political networks on the Left.

The New Venture Fund is the biggest nonprofit in the Arabella Network and serves as a vehicle for "progressive" foundations and donors to quietly funnel money into a wide range of political advocacy campaigns.

EXPO is also backed by Neo Philanthropy, a "progressive" grant-making organization that sponsors numerous leftist groups across the United States. Neo Philanthropy is funded by some of the larges pro-crime donor institutions in the country, including George Soros’s Open Society Foundations and the Ford Foundation.

LIFT Wisconsin

LIFT Wisconsin presents itself as a nonprofit helping people overcome "legal barriers" in the criminal justice system.

In reality, the group's mission is rooted in the belief that the justice system is deliberately designed to "disenfranchise" low-income individuals. Backed by leftist donors, LIFT pushes to erase criminal records, wipe eviction histories, and reinstate driver's licenses.

LIFT is a project of the Economic Justice Institute, which is funded by the Center for Economic Democracy (CED)—a radical Boston nonprofit that rejects capitalism, pushes racial preferences in hiring, and advocates for remaking America around socialist policy.

CED openly calls for wealth redistribution, insists the nation is run by white supremacy, and backs numerous green environmental restrictions.

LIFT also receives support from the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Fund for Strategic Innovation, established by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and his wife. Schmidt alone has funneled over $1 million into LIFT, further highlighting just how entrenched Big Tech elites are in funding pro-criminal policies under the guise of "justice reform."

Hiding Behind Good Intentions

All too often, so-called "criminal justice" groups present themselves as champions of reform—claiming to work for the good of everyday Americans. But when we follow the money and examine the real outcomes of their policies, a different picture emerges.

Wisconsin cannot afford the disastrous consequences of watered-down crime policies. Private nonprofits should not be bailing hardened criminals out of jail—and they definitely shouldn’t be propped up by tech giants like Microsoft and Google.

What's happening in Wisconsin is just one piece of a much larger game. Again and again, we see Big Tech, radical billionaires, and sprawling "dark money" networks funneling massive sums from anonymous donors to destabilize communities. Most recently, many of these same players helped bankroll the Tesla riots, which left millions of dollars in personal property destroyed.

Wisconsinites must push back against leftist organizations that spread chaos under the banner of "criminal justice" reform. To end the ongoing crime wave, voters must elect lawmakers who stand firmly for law, order, and the safety of their communities.
