Wisconsin Needs a Border Wall to Shut Out Chicago’s Illegal Alien Violence

Crime-ridden sanctuary states and ‘welcoming cities’ make bad neighbors

The heartbreaking murder of a Loyola University student in Chicago underscores how governments clinging to sanctuary policies create deadly communities for law-abiding citizens. The Illinois shooting has prompted Kenosha County in neighboring Wisconsin to double down on its resolve to cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

“Chicago’s Welcoming City Ordinance remains in force and limits cooperation with federal immigration enforcement,” Kenosha County District Attorney Xavier Solis said in a recent social media post. “Chicago is just south of Kenosha County, and what happens there does not stay there. Failed policies in a neighboring major city can have consequences throughout our region, including here in Kenosha County.”

Loyola student Sheridan Gorman, 18, was walking in Chicago’s lakefront Rogers Park with friends at around 1 a.m. on March 19 when a masked gunman approached. She tried to flee, but he shot her in the head. Gorman died there in the park, according to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Gorman graduated high school in Yorktown, New York, last year and was about to finish her freshman year at college. In seconds, a beautiful life brimming with potential was stolen, leaving Gorman’s family awash in grief they will carry all their days.

Undocumented, Unlawful, Unpredictable

Jose Medina-Medina, a Venezuelan criminal illegal alien, has been charged with murder following his March 20 arrest by Chicago Police. But this was not his first meeting with law enforcement.

Medina-Medina entered the United States illegally, and the U.S. Border Patrol picked him up and released him on May 9, 2023. He was free to roam anywhere in the country under former President Joe Biden’s weak immigration policy. Just 41 days later, on June 19, 2023, Medina-Medina was arrested for shoplifting in Chicago—and released.

One can imagine what those experiences taught him: In the United States, you can do anything you want without punishment—cross our border illegally, steal from store shelves, and survive the only way possible when living under the radar for years: by breaking other laws.

Illegal aliens must steal, illegally work off the books, or mooch off willing enablers—often with strings attached—to get food and shelter. They don’t take our laws seriously when we don’t enforce them. When the natural law of consequences does not apply, they get more brazen. The violence of the illegal immigrant shadow culture spills into city parks, and innocent people are murdered.

“This is exactly why crimes committed by illegal aliens must be taken seriously from the very beginning,” Solis wrote of Gorman’s murder. “Retail theft and other so-called lower-level ‘non-violent’ offenses are not harmless. They are often signs of continued lawlessness, disregard for our laws, and escalating danger to the public. When offenders are taken into custody, we must treat those cases seriously, not as minor inconveniences, but as opportunities to protect the public before worse violence occurs.”

Spilling Over State Borders

Chicago is a “Welcoming City,” meaning city employees are prohibited from asking anyone about their immigration status; no one can be denied city services based on said status; and police are not allowed to cooperate with ICE unless a court orders them to do so.

These sanctuary policies are an organized effort of the $4 million Atlanta-based nonprofit Welcoming America Inc., which has certified 44 welcoming cities and aims for more. Instead of listening to constituents, local lawmakers are swayed by nonprofit activists to pass laws that make it easier for illegal aliens living in the shadows to evade justice.

In addition to Chicago’s welcoming status, Illinois is a sanctuary state, further shielding criminal illegal aliens from law enforcement and encouraging them to roam beyond the city.

Neighboring states must understand that Illinois cannot contain the violent illegal aliens it has welcomed. These are people who don’t respect laws or borders. IllegalAlienCrimes.com, a project of Restoration News, shows counties along Wisconsin’s southern border—Rock, Walworth, Racine, and Kenosha—have been very active with ICE detainer requests in recent years.

It is not safe in Chicago’s high-crime neighborhoods—wise people don’t go there. Now, we know it is not safe in Chicago’s beautiful lake view parks. And because of Illinois sanctuary policies, it is not safe to share a border—we are all at risk.

Rogers Park could have been any park in the United States. Alleged killer Jose Medina-Medina could move anywhere undetected. Sheridan Gorman could have been anyone’s daughter.

Where are the protests crying out for policy changes in her name?
