Racist David Crowley is a Wisconsin Beer Garden Buzz Kill

The Democrat wannabe governor says Wisconsin’s beer garden tradition is mostly a white-people thing, finally taking his race baiting too far.

If Wisconsin’s Democrat gubernatorial candidate David Crowley shows up at an Oktoberfest beer garden wearing lederhosen and swinging a beer stein, check to see if he’s there under duress or just faking it for the campaign. Why else would he attend? Crowley says beer gardens are racist.

In a 2021 social media post about Milwaukee County’s park system revenue, Crowley noted that, "Revenues often come from activities that those with discretionary funding can afford like golf, the marina, and beer gardens. These activities are traditionally and predominately supported by white users. This racial inequity is born from a history of systemic racism & injustice."

It’s a problem in Crowley’s mind, because the parks department’s staff and budget are spent partially on maintaining "white" attractions, leaving less money to "make the necessary changes to achieve racial equity."

No word on which race gets swings, slides, and merry-go-rounds.

All this is pretty weird considering Crowley raised a glass in May in the Juneau Beer Garden. Granted, a bunch of white guys surrounded him, but they had beer, and he was welcome there. Where is the racism?

Disdain for Wisconsin’s Culture

Race-baiting may work in Milwaukee County, where 61 percent of the population is white, and 27 percent is black, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. But statewide, Wisconsin is 85 percent white and 7 percent black.

Everyone hates racists. A candidate who sees whites as privileged sees them as a people to be taken down a peg. Crowley looks at most fish fry Friday supper club going, cheese curd snacking, snowmobiling, UTV trail riding, beer brat eating, spotted cow drinking, musky hunting, old-fashioned mixing, Illinois tolerating, beer garden loving Packer Backers and thinks: racists.

As Milwaukee County Executive, Crowley is constantly victim signaling his black culture. He was offended during the primary, calling it a "slur" when, after being endorsed by Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers, folks called him the "establishment" candidate.

"I worked extremely hard to be where I am today," Crowley said in an interview after describing hardships he overcame. "And so, when people try to call me the establishment, I look at that as a slur. Particularly as an African American candidate."

Suffering has no race; it is part of the human experience. Suggesting only black people overcome hardships is myopic and offensive to other races.

Racism As a Public Health Crisis

Former Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele declared racism a public health crisis in 2019 in Milwaukee. Crowley became county executive in 2020. While Crowley was executive-elect, he and Abele together signed a binding county ordinance turning the initial 2019 resolution into a permanent legal mandate requiring Milwaukee County to eliminate institutional racism. It called on the county to "Address policies, practices and power structures that, whether intentionally or unintentionally, work in favor of white people" and create barriers for nonwhites.

In 2022, Crowley established the Milwaukee County Office of Equity with the aim of advancing "equity based" policies. Its website says it exists to "promote equal opportunity, reduce racial disparities, and tackle issues central to the rights and needs of African American residents." Not Hispanics, Asians, or whites. The Office of Equity has seven full-time employees, an annual budget of $820,000 with $666,000 going to salaries. It tasks its unelected employees with modernizing "select Milwaukee County policies that affect both staff and the communities served," whatever that means.

This is an unneeded luxury office in a county facing a $46.7 million budget deficit.

Pity Party

On social media, Crowley promises to make Wisconsin "just as prosperous a place to call home for me and my children as it is for our white counterparts." Counterparts: as in we are the same, but at different places. Crowley’s worldview is one that separates us—you know, like a racist.

Poor, downtrodden Crowley has apparently not been able to find prosperity in Wisconsin on his mere $129,106 taxpayer-funded annual salary. If only people were not so racist, he could get somewhere in life instead of being trapped in this elected position as leader of one of the nation’s most prominent counties. The cost of dry cleaning his suits alone must be a terrible burden.

"I wish people would see us black men (black women & other POC) as not just equals, but as human & not criminals or monsters or those unworthy of compassion & a right to live." Crowley posted in 2018, referencing the 2012 death of Trayvon Martin.

No one looks at Crowley and thinks he is a monster, unworthy of compassion. A slimy politician, sure, but obviously human. Perhaps what Crowley means is that he wishes black culture were more prominent—while wishing white culture would just go away.

Talk like this shows that Crowley sees 85 percent of Wisconsin’s population as the enemy. He would do well to think of whites as humans too. We are all individuals in the struggle. He is way too focused on race. That is why the Black Congressional Caucus endorsed Crowley for Governor.

Here’s a fun test. Take anything Crowley says about race from now on and slip the word white in there to see how it would fly.

Wisconsin does not need a racist leader who already divides the population into the white "haves" to be taken from, and the black "have-nots" in need of special treatment.

Crowley wants to lead Wisconsin so he can level what he believes is an unfair playing field and finally get "his people" what he believes they deserve. He will attack every imagined advantage he perceives whites have—like beer gardens—breeding contempt and strife. That will change Wisconsin’s beloved culture, irreparably. That is not the job description for governor.

Wisconsin is for everyone.
