‘Not Just a Clump of Cells’: Tim Tebow Challenges Pro-Lifers to Value Every Life

Tebow urges the pro-life movement to match its convictions with real-world compassion.

The year was 1986, and an American missionary and father of four was preparing to preach to a crowd of locals in a remote Philippine village.

A year earlier, he and his family had followed a divine call to travel halfway across the world to share the Gospel with the island's natives. As the evangelist readied himself to speak, he felt that tug again and began to weep for the children being aborted worldwide.

"And God put it on his heart that he needed to have another baby," former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow recounted at the Florida Right to Life gala in Jacksonville, Florida, on Jan. 16.

The story was a highlight of Tebow’s keynote address. The SEC Network analyst revealed that soon after the missionary and his wife resolved to expand their family, doctors discovered what they believed to be "a mass of fetal tissue," or "a tumor," in her uterus.

That "tumor" turned out to be a baby boy. Still, concerned about complications from a prior illness, doctors urged the mother to abort. "They kept telling her over and over again, 'You need to have an abortion because if you don't, it will cost you your baby's life; it will cost you your life,'" Tebow said.

Choosing to trust God, the couple continued the pregnancy. They enlisted the help of an American-trained doctor to deliver the baby, and in August 1987, their faith was rewarded with a miracle.

Tebow said that as the mother gave birth, the doctor looked at her and her husband in disbelief. "He said, 'I have no idea how your baby is alive because the placenta's only a tiny bit still attached. I don't know how your baby has enough nutrients to survive. Ma'am, sir, it's the greatest miracle that I've ever seen in my entire life.'"

Then the doctor handed Tebow to his mother.

"I was malnourished, but I tried to make up for it quickly," the towering, 6-foot-3 athlete joked.

"Timmy the Tumor," as his siblings later called him, went on to win a Heisman Trophy and two Bowl Championship Series National Championships. He also led the 2011 Denver Broncos to the NFL Playoffs.

More importantly, Tebow has helped countless vulnerable children and human trafficking victims through his nonprofit, the Tim Tebow Foundation, and his bold Christian faith has inspired millions more. None of it would have been possible if his mother had listened to the cacophony of voices pressuring her to end his life.

"I'm only here because so many people were praying for my mom and my dad," Tebow said. "My mom and my dad were trusting God, that God actually had a plan for my life. That I wasn't here by accident, but I was actually created on purpose and for a purpose, and I was created in love, by love, and for love—not just a clump of cells."

Tebow noted that his faith and story have long put him in the pro-life camp. Yet he stressed that the pro-life movement's mission must extend beyond protecting life in the womb.

"I really believe that if we want to talk about being pro-life, then we need to be pro-life all the time, no matter what, when, or where," he said.

Fighting for Life

Though not restricted to battling abortion, the pro-life movement has long targeted ending the practice as its top priority. But being pro-life, Tebow said, must mean more than simply being pro-birth.

"If you value life, then you treat life as valuable," he said. "And what do we do with things that are valuable in our life? We treasure them. We protect them. We care for them."

On that, Tebow leads by example. The very mission of his foundation is "to bring Faith, Hope and Love to those needing a brighter day in their darkest hour of need." The nonprofit focuses its efforts on human trafficking prevention, caring for orphans, aiding those with profound medical needs, and ministering to those with special needs.

National Right to Life also makes a point to advocate for defenseless life at all stages. Through its state affiliates, the nonprofit works to secure legal protections for those threatened by abortion, infanticide, assisted suicide, and euthanasia.

Still, it's not always easy to show compassion toward others—especially those we vehemently disagree with. Tebow admitted there had been times he'd "missed the mark" on loving others as Christians are called to. He urged the audience not to make the same mistake.

"Life matters," Tebow said. "Showing real compassion matters. Valuing the vulnerable matters so much that God created his Son, who died the most excruciating death so that we could have life and life abundantly."

He also encouraged pro-lifers to demonstrate their passion for life every day—not just with their voices and votes, but with tangible actions. "This is about real lives that are vulnerable, that are depending on you and me to … not just talk about how we're pro-life, but stand up and fight for them, so that they can have life and life abundantly, like Jesus died for."
