ICE Detains Illegal Alien Charged With Dealing Fentanyl in Virginia—Why It Matters
An anti-sanctuary agreement will accelerate his removal process from detention facility.
Federal immigration officials have placed an immigration detainer on a criminal illegal alien connected to a fentanyl overdose at a Virgina high school.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) imposed a detainer against Isaac Melendez-Carranza, 31, of El Salvador on August 20—the same day he was arrested by the Loudoun County Sherriff’s Office. ICE lodged the immigration detainer and a warrant of removal with the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center in Leesburg, Virginia, which honors detainers as part of its 287(g) agreement with ICE. Under the 287(g) program, local and state officials partner with the federal government for the purpose of enforcing federal immigration laws.
Melendez-Carranza has been charged with possession of a dangerous substance with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school. He is also charged with the intent to manufacture, sell and distribute fentanyl.
The detention and removal effort in Virginia follows in step with other recent immigration enforcement efforts. This past summer, ICE arrested 121 individuals during summer enforcement initiative in and around Lake Lewisville, Texas. Among those arrested were two members of the Tren de Aragua terrorist organization. The ICE operation, which began on June 21 and ended on Labor Day Weekend, “targeted public safety threats, supporting boating enforcement, and strengthened federal, state and local law enforcement coordination, according to an ICE press release.
Why It Matters
- Participation in the 287(g) heightens the efficiency of ICE operations making it easier to detain and remove dangerous criminals.
- The Trump White House has reported on a huge drop in violent crime tied with stricter immigration enforcement. The public needs to be made aware of the progress being made.
- Young students are particularly vulnerable to the actions of criminal illegal aliens distributing harmful substances. The interagency cooperation makes less likely that students will be victimized.
The Big Picture
- Blue state elected officials who have been demonizing ICE agents are putting their own constituents in danger by making it more difficult to apprehend dangerous criminals. They are also covering up the violent nature of those who have been incarcerated.
- As Acting ICE Director David J. Venturella said in a press release, “Anyone who comes to this country illegally and then allegedly peddles deadly fentanyl near our children’s schools should expect ICE to come for them. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office understands that protecting our communities must come before politics. ICE will relentlessly pursue criminal illegal aliens who threaten Americans, take them into custody, and remove them from the United States.”
