Gen Z’s Skyrocketing Attraction to Socialism—Republicans Are Doing Nothing to Stop It

The Left pushes affordability but doesn’t define how to pay for the “free” stuff.

A new Daily Signal poll has found that 84 percent of Gen Z Democrats hold a favorable view of socialism. In an age where "isms" are used so recklessly, it's fair to say the majority of this sample doesn't even know what socialism is. So, what are they actually supporting—and why?

Our youngest generations are children of the digital age, and as a byproduct, constant marketing via social media. Fifty-nine percent receive most of their news from platforms, such as Instagram, TikTok, and X. It’s their version of the 24/7 television news cycle, but even more accessible, cut into seconds-long segments, and plagued by buzzwords that undermine context and reality.

Democrats have tapped into this market in ways the Republicans consistently fail at. The primary example is the rise of interest in socialism, and thus the confusion among young voters about what that term actually means.

The blue tsunami that conquered the midterms speaks for itself. It’s no secret that President Donald Trump’s favorability is tanking across the board. Headlines about the Iran war, surging gas prices, and unaffordability aren’t just critiques against the administration. They’re fuel to usher in a new era of Democrat policies.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and other figures, whom the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) proudly endorse, target Gen Z voters by providing “solutions” to these kitchen-table problems. But the issue isn’t that these so-called fixes (e.g., free grocery stores, rent-controlled housing, etc.) are fundamentally wrong and ineffective in practice. It’s that Republicans have done nothing to provide an alternative.

Instead of a prudent rebuttal, they’ve resorted to calling these politicians “communists.” It’s the Right’s version of Trump Derangement Syndrome. And it will inevitably hand power to the Democrats.

No one tells Gen Z voters about why the Nordic countries they idolize have homogeneous demographics that make them virtually incomparable to the melting pot of America, or how they rely on free markets to fund the social programs young people want so badly.

Few right-leaning forums clarify that universal healthcare does not equal universal access. They don’t expand on what welfare programs would cost a generation that actually loves the perks of capitalism. Or how the federally run public education system, arguably the most socialist part of our government, has failed students, disproportionately those in low-income areas.

This is the result of establishment Republicans refusing to have true discussions with young Americans who are feeling the effects of legitimate economic and societal strains. The Democrats are talking to young people. They’re actively marketing ideas to them.

What they’re offering is entirely unsustainable and has led to the demise of countless democracies and civilizations. But at least they’re talking about it.

And while the complexities and nuances of politics cannot and should not be boiled down to marketing campaigns, there is something to be said for how parties are perceived by young people.

Today, Gen Z associates the Republicans with far-right figures like Dale Partridge and Joel Webbon who have hijacked and divided the party. And though they claim to be conservatives themselves, they’re further away from the heart of conservatism and what used to define the Republican Party than most Democrats are. Yet, as a party, Republicans don’t take the time to unpack this. Instead, they play defense, throw out a few strawman arguments, and unintentionally corroborate the false claim.

On the other side of the aisle, Democrats have doubled down on being the party of affordability, and are therefore perceived to be more in line with the concerns of everyday Americans. It does not matter that they have no legitimate plan to increase affordability, lower taxes, or improve quality of life. All they need to do is say “we will offer free ___” or “look who’s in the White House, then look at your grocery bill” and they have a winning hand every time.

In short, the issue isn’t that socialism is now widely viewed positively among young Americans. The socialist framework and the DSA’s platform (even when they tack on “Democratic” in front of it) can easily be proven problematic by anyone well-versed in geopolitics, basic economics, or George Orwell’s Animal Farm, for that matter.

Need to Dispel Socialist Myth

The problem is that we are aimlessly watching an entire generation fall for the same lie that put generations before us on the front lines of ideological warfare and doing absolutely nothing productive to stop it.

Robert M. Whaples, a Wake Forest University economics professor, found that six colleagues, including an “avowed old-fashioned socialist,” increased students’ favorability of capitalism over socialism after the two frameworks were taught correctly and robustly.

Whaples states, “If Millennials and Gen Zs think that the system is unfair, it is incumbent on us to let them know how the system works, at both an empirical and a theoretical level.”

This observation is the key. Gen Z is tired of being perceived as overdramatic and fragile when they voice their qualms with the state of the economy and our government. Instead of ostracizing them with blanket statements and accusations, the opportunity to sympathize and offer real solutions must be seized.

Those on the Right should not be discouraged by the Daily Signal poll. They should be empowered to humbly initiate and engage in fruitful conversation, because that is when minds are changed, and truth prevails.

Consistency and prudence are pillars of conservatism. If we blindly surrender complete allegiance to a single administration or party and refuse to participate in genuine debate, we’ve betrayed our entire philosophy.

It is critical to dispel the myth that socialism is the answer to our country’s problems. But we don’t accomplish that without confronting the conversation head-on with the young voters who will determine the trajectory of this nation for generations to come.
