Finish the Job: Defund Planned Parenthood for Good

With the abortion giant on the ropes, Hill Republicans can deliver the knockout punch—or risk being knocked out of Congress themselves.

If Republicans in Washington want their base energized for the midterm elections this November, there’s one promise they cannot afford to break: permanently defunding Planned Parenthood.

For years, GOP candidates have campaigned on the pledge to cut off all federal funding to the nation’s largest abortion provider. Now, they have the power to do so—and their voters expect them to follow through.

To their credit, lawmakers’ passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBA) last year did halt federal Medicaid reimbursements to Planned Parenthood—for one year. That year was shortened by litigation that tied up the provision’s enforcement for several months. Still, the law will have cost Planned Parenthood hundreds of millions in federal funding—and saved countless innocent lives.

The Medicaid losses—combined with the Trump administration’s temporary withholding of millions in Title X family planning grants—prompted Planned Parenthood to shutter nearly 50 of its “health” centers in 2025. Who knows how many American babies are alive today because of those closures?

Now, imagine how many more lives we could save if we closed the spigot on all Planned Parenthood’s federal funding streams for good. Starved of our hard-earned tax dollars, the abortion giant would be left defanged, demoralized, and diminished.

Yet with its Title X funding quietly restored and the Medicaid provision soon to expire, Planned Parenthood is poised to resume using our taxes to end the lives of the innocent unborn.

For the GOP’s pro-life base, that is a nonstarter.

Recent Cygnal polling affirms that 86 percent of GOP voters oppose federal funding of abortion. Additionally, some 32 percent of GOP voters say they would be less enthusiastic about voting this fall if Republican leaders weaken or abandon pro-life policies, while 34 percent would be less willing to volunteer or otherwise participate in campaign efforts.

That lack of enthusiasm could be devastating in Iowa and South Carolina, where two Republican Senate seats are up for grabs. The Cygnal survey found that 89 percent of Iowa voters and 86 percent in South Carolina oppose federal funding of abortion.

While Sens. Joni Ernst (Iowa) and Lindsey Graham (S.C.) both won their seats by comfortable margins in 2020, neither would have survived a 32-percent drop in Republican turnout.

As Cygnal pollster and Senior Partner John Rogers pointed out in a memo accompanying the poll, the pro-life vote “is not a marginal constituency, it is the GOP primary core.”

The expiration date for the OBBA’s Medicaid reimbursement provision is July 4, which coincides with the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

For centuries, Americans have touted that document’s recognition of the unalienable rights to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Yet we continue to deny the most vulnerable among us those very rights. How much longer will we perpetuate this hypocrisy?

If this is truly to be the Golden Age of America, then let it begin with honoring our founding principles and practicing what we have long preached.

Let it begin with our elected officials keeping their promises rather than watering them down to appease those on the wrong side of history.

Let it begin with doing the right thing: defunding Planned Parenthood.
