Virginians Approve Vile Pro-Abortion Amendment
Despite pleas from Christian clergy against the ‘radically unjust’ abortion and same-sex marriage initiatives—‘false prophets’ overtook the stage.
Despite clergy across the state taking a rare public stand, Virginians passed two anti-biblical constitutional amendments. Church leaders spent nearly a year calling on Christians to reject the abortion and same-sex marriage laws.
The Virginia abortion amendment is a vile piece of legislation. With it, the state joins other radical blue states that do not have gestational limits. It prohibits any restrictions or penalties for abortions at any stage, including consent for minors or prosecutions against anyone assisting with an abortion. If a mother decides at 40 weeks pregnant, just before delivery, that delivering the baby would cause harm to her mental health, she could legally have an abortionist kill her baby.
The same-sex marriage amendment is about more than just legalizing gay marriage. Virginia Democrats embedded gender ideology language that could force government agencies, such as schools and even private businesses, to adopt policies that conflict with biological reality. There are also no religious freedom protections for clergy who oppose same-sex or “transgender” marriages.
Church Leaders Took a Stand
Churches are often hesitant to get involved in political issues, but these topics attacked fundamental biblical principles. They couldn’t be ignored.
The Family Foundation of Virginia led the opposition to the two constitutional amendments. Pastor Michael Morisi, the group’s vice president of the Church Ambassador Network, spent the past year traveling the state to urge churches to speak up, talking with more than 60,000 people and starting with direct outreach to pastors.
“The culture decided to call these issues ‘political’ to try to silence the Church,” Morisi told Restoration News. He urged pastors to talk about these issues from the pulpit, arguing they are biblical issues, not political ones.
On September 13, 2026, more than 1,600 Virginia churches participated in “One Voice Sunday,” an event Morisi organized to encourage pastors to speak about the amendments and the importance of voting. Hundreds more churches later addressed the issues from the pulpit.
The overwhelming response of churches across the state encouraged Morisi. He said both the Richmond and Arlington Catholic Dioceses were proactive in instructing Catholics to get out and vote against the harmful amendments.
Bishop Michael Burbidge, the head of the Catholic Diocese of Arlington, instructed Catholics to vote “no” on both amendments. The diocese proclaimed, “The Church boldly proclaims its ‘Yes!’ to the good of human life and the sanctity of marriage. For us to speak this ‘yes,’ we must together proclaim ‘no!’ to these radically unjust ballot initiatives.”
An open letter to Virginians, organized by another group, signed by over 400 pastors began, “We write to you with prayer and concern … on the abortion and marriage amendments to the Virginia Constitution. We believe these two amendments must be rejected for the Commonwealth of Virginia because they will harm our state as they are opposed to human flourishing and contrary to the Word of God.”
Clearly, not enough parishioners listened.
False Preachers Side with Evil
Pastor Morisi said he received negative feedback from some clergy he reached out to. Some told him, “I can’t talk about abortion because I have Democrats in the church.” One black pastor said he would not speak against abortion because it is a part of black culture. Other left-wing clergy spoke against Morisi’s efforts, but that didn’t deter him. “God is tired of false preachers and teachers,” Morisi said. Emphasizing that God calls clergy to teach what He instructs in Scripture, even if it offends some individuals, he noted, “I want people to draw closer to the Lord and know Him better,” said Morisi.
The Bible warns Christians throughout about false teachers. 2 Timothy 4:3-4 says, “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.” In Matthew 16, Jesus warned his followers about the false teachers of his time, the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Church leaders who fail to speak the truth about abortion and same-sex marriage are no better than the Pharisees and Sadducees who persecuted Jesus.
There Is Hope
As previously reported by Restoration News, the Founding Freedoms Law Center (FFLC) has filed multiple lawsuits against two constitutional amendments. The lawsuits challenge, among other things, the deceptive ballot language Democrats wrote, which did not accurately portray what the legislation contains.
A Tazewell County judge is set to hear the FFLC case against the abortion amendment on November 13.
The Family Foundation believes voters may regret their “yes” vote for these amendments, saying:
When parents discover they have lost the right to know when their daughter faces an unplanned pregnancy, they’ll regret this vote. When men demand to be in women’s shower rooms because Question 2 just declared sex and gender as two different things, buyer’s remorse will set in. When the blue wave that swept up these amendments recedes, voters will see what’s been left in our Constitution.
Christians must continue speaking up to defend biblical principles and expose false teachers. Silence is not an option.
