EXCLUSIVE: 51 GOP Senators Urge RFK Jr. to Take Action on Dangerous Abortion Pill

The urgent campaign to protect women's health is led by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) citing a study by the Restoration of America Foundation.

All but two Senate Republicans are urging Health and Human Services Sec. Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., to take strong action against the abortion pill, in light of new reports about its threat to the health of pregnant women.

The Oct. 9 letter obtained by Restoration News, circulated by South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham with signatures from 50 other Republican Senators, asks Sec. Kennedy and FDA Commissioner Marty Makary to tighten oversight of the abortion pill after Joe Biden loosened regulations in 2021.

Only two Republican Senators—Lisa Murkowski (AK) and Susan Collins (ME)—declined to sign. Collins criticized the Supreme Court's 2022 Dobbs decision returning abortion laws to the states; Murkowski used the decision to reiterate "her strong support for the codification of abortion rights" under Roe v. Wade.

"The 'abortion-on-demand' culture enabled by the Biden-Harris administration's removal of critical safeguards on the only FDA-approved abortion regimen is currently the biggest threat to unborn life in America today," Sen. Graham wrote. "But in November 2024, seventy-three million Americans voted to bring a stop to this radical abortion agenda."

At the heart of the letter is a recent Restoration of America Foundation study revealing the risk of serious medical complications after ingesting mifepristone—one of two drugs used in the abortion pill—is a stunning 22 times higher than reported on the drug label.

At least 151 deaths and 4,000 serious adverse side effects are linked to mifepristone, according to a Restoration News review of the FDA's own data. That was exacerbated by the Biden FDA's decision to loosen access to the abortion pill in 2021, by removing the doctor visit requirement and allowing the drugs to be mailed to women's homes.

As a result, there is now a black market of abortion pills illegally mailed into pro-life states such as Texas and Louisiana, while Democrat-run states such as New York and California shield abortionists from extradition.

Sec. Kennedy and Commissioner Makary have pledged to review the science surrounding the abortion pill, but so far have little to show for it. Earlier this month, the FDA approved a second generic version of mifepristone, a fact the signatories are "deeply concerned" about: "We urge you to take decisive action to reevaluate whether this generic version of mifepristone is suitable to enter the market."

The letter includes five recommendations for the FDA:

  1. Suspend the approval of any new generic versions of mifepristone until further risk analysis is concluded;
  2. Ensure any new generic versions are subject to ongoing risk mitigation reviews;
  3. Reinstate the in-person dispensing requirement for the abortion drug changed by Biden;
  4. Suspend all distribution of the abortion drug as an "imminent hazard" under existing law; and
  5. Withdraw FDA guidance permitting pharmacy distribution of mifepristone.

Each of these, if achieved by the Trump administration under its standing commitment to be the most pro-life administration in history, would undo the damage caused by the Biden administration and get us back to Trump 1.0's position on the abortion pill.

"The life, safety, freedom, and health of millions of Americans, born and unborn, depends on it," the Senators conclude.
