Does Eugene DePasquale Even Want To Be Attorney General?

While Pennsylvania is awash in crime, the Soros-backed AG candidate doesn’t even mention crime on his campaign site

After spending 14 of the last 17 years in elected office, former Pennsylvania Auditor General Eugene DePasquale has already tired of the private sector and is running for Attorney General.

While campaigning to be Pennsylvania’s chief law enforcement officer, DePasquale cites his extensive resume of government positions including roles in economic development, environmental protection, and serving as a state legislator. Everything it seems, besides being a prosecutor or working in law enforcement.

No Concern For Crime

Perhaps this is why as he details his long list of priorities if elected, he never mentions crime. Pennsylvania is currently seeing dramatic crime increases including a 52 percent increase in murder, a 71 percent increase in carjacking, and a stunning 10,000 percent increase in human trafficking.

DePasquale’s self-stated priorities if elected are: “protecting democracy,” defending abortion rights, and corporate greed. Ahead of announcing his campaign, DePasquale said the critical fights he was ready to take on were “abortion access, book bans, climate change, gun violence, and voting rights.”

After all, getting carjacked or murdered is hardly a major concern for anyone compared to the risk next year will be slightly warmer or a book not being available in a public school library.

Bizarre Crime Policies

In his 14 years in public office, DePasquale has advocated a number of weak or even bizarre crime policies.

As auditor general, DePasquale frequently championed soft-on-crime policies in the name of financial savings, including gutting cash bail. DePasquale also called for reforming mandatory minimums because crime was going in down with the increasing prison population. As a state legislator, DePasquale pushed for charging smaller towns for state police coverage.

DePasquale however found his limit when it came to giving plea deals to overweight truckers, calling it a jeopardization of public safety. Or maybe it was the million dollars in fines and fees the state government was unable to collect and spend that he was more concerned about.

Is This Just a Waiting Room For Higher Office?

So why exactly does Eugene DePasquale want to be attorney general? Is he serious about being Pennsylvania’s chief law enforcement officer and protecting the people of the Commonwealth; or does he it merely view it as the next step on the ladder, the waiting room for his future political ambitions?

Given his well-known penchant for giving a press conference at every availability while auditor general and willingness to break new ground in what his office could issue a report on, it is hard to imagine he will not use the office of attorney general as an opportunity to cement his left-wing bona fides ahead of a run for higher office. As a liberal Democrat, that will undoubtedly come by suing energy companies, religious organizations, and local school boards and not by protecting the citizens of the Commonwealth from criminals.
