China’s Election Meddling Highlights the Need for Open Voter Data
All Americans should be able to verify voter data themselves
Foreign adversaries should not possess the tools to map and potentially exploit American elections for their own geopolitical aims while ordinary American citizens remain in the dark about who is registered and who is voting. Thanks to the voter database published by election integrity watchdog Voter Reference Foundation (VRF), Americans can now access and monitor, free of charge, the same data as the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
President Donald Trump’s recent primetime address on election interference delivered a necessary reminder that America’s adversaries seek to mine American voter data and influence its elections. Beijing’s acquisition of roughly 220 million U.S. voter files—names, addresses, party preferences, and more—underscores the extent to which China is willing to compile data on American voters. Trump correctly framed it as an “unprecedented election security nightmare.” Intelligence data shows the CCP even used a dedicated data exploitation unit.
Americans Should Become Just as Informed as China
Some of the criticism of Trump’s address carries legitimate weight.
Election security experts pointed out that much of this voter registration data is already publicly available or commercially obtainable. Campaigns, political parties, data brokers, and yes, foreign actors can purchase or download versions of these files.
Trump’s speech did not claim China altered ballots or tabulation systems as his critics led people to believe. Rather, he noted that China can access this information with relative ease and tried to use it to undermine American elections and influence public opinion.
But the best defense against malign foreign actors—whether social media meddling or attempted voter fraud—is not secrecy but radical transparency for the American people.
Every voter deserves the same ready access to official voter rolls that China and others already enjoy. An informed electorate that can see the data with its own eyes becomes far harder to deceive.
This is why the work of election integrity watchdog Voter Reference Foundation (VRF) is crucial.
The platform empowers ordinary people to spot problems ranging from voters listed as active long after their deaths to questionable ballots coming from nursing home residents to noncitizens being on the rolls.
It accomplishes this by obtaining official state voter files under the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA), sourced directly from government records. In 36 states and the District of Columbia, anyone can search by name or address and review registration details, voting history, and party affiliation, depending on individual states' laws.
“The data is already out there,” VRF Executive Director Joe Benson told Restoration News. “A bad actor’s advantage lies in how difficult it is for the public to access the same information. Full transparency removes that advantage.”
Democrats Want to Leave This Knowledge to China
VRF’s work has not gone unchallenged. Democrat-run states have attempted to restrict publication, demand non-disclosure pledges, and even threatened VRF with legal action. If they had their way, only political campaigns and foreign intelligence services would have access to Americans’ voting records.
Thankfully, federal courts have repeatedly sided with VRF, affirming that the NVRA requires public inspection of these records and preempts conflicting state barriers. Recent wins include a nearly million-dollar settlement from the state of New Mexico, affirmed by the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, and a favorable district court ruling in Massachusetts.
Commercial data firms and foreign intelligence services have long trafficked in this information. VRF simply levels the field so that Americans can examine the same records.
Trump is right to demand stronger safeguards against foreign meddling. But the most effective safeguard is not locking the data away. It is ensuring that every citizen can open the same books as adversarial intelligence services, compare the numbers, and confirm for themselves that the American election system remains honest.

The strongest protection for free and fair elections from foreign-driven influence or fraud is an American public that already has that information at its fingertips.
