Democrat Policies Put Noncitizens on New Jersey's Voter Rolls—Proof We Need the SAVE Act

Clean voter rolls are the best way to stop ballot fraud and restore confidence in elections.

Democrats are blaming the DMV for accidentally registering 6,600 noncitizens to vote in New Jersey, 400 of whom have cast a ballot at least once since 2023. While Democrat Gov. Mikie Sherrill says it's her predecessor's fault, and claims "[no] elections were swayed," the real story is what Restoration of America founder Doug Truax has been saying since 2020: This is what you get with sloppy, inaccurate voter rolls.

It's a simple principle: the voter file is a snapshot of who votes. States that keep clean, accurate voter lists—such as Florida and Ohio—lower their risk of ballot fraud. States whose lists are full of people who've died, moved, or can't prove their U.S. citizenship invite voter fraud.

The SAVE America Act would require proof of citizenship before anyone registers to vote in any state. So why are Democrats fighting it tooth and nail in Congress?

How We Got Here

  • Federal law already requires states to maintain accurate, clean voter rolls. Yet blue states are notorious for bloating their rolls with ineligible voters, even as Democrats claim noncitizen voting is a myth.
  • The New Jersey GOP and Republican National Committee discovered evidence that New Jersey had registered noncitizens to vote—some of whom cast ballots—going back decades.
  • Blue state policies make this shockingly easy by:
    • Offering illegal aliens access to driver's licenses
    • Automatically registering residents to vote through the DMV
    • Blocking photo ID requirements to vote
    • Allowing individuals to register to vote and cast a ballot on Election Day
    • And refusing to clean bloated voter rolls

Why It Matters

  • Noncitizen voting invalidates legitimate votes. Every illegal vote cast by a noncitizen effectively cancels out the vote of an American citizen.
  • Bloated voter rolls damage trust in elections. Our republic cannot survive if no one trusts the outcome of elections—or the people who count our ballots. One citizen, one vote is the bedrock of our representative republic.
  • Representation is for American citizens only. Our leaders are supposed to represent U.S. citizens, not foreigners, so only U.S. citizens should vote.

How Do We Fix It?

The solution is sunshine.

Our founder, Doug Truax, launched Voter Reference Foundation in 2022 to purchase and publish every state's voter list so anyone can check who's registered to vote. You can do it right now at www.VoteRef.com—unless you live in New Jersey, where VRF is fighting in court for the right under federal law to make the Garden State's messy voter list publicly available.

What Can I Do?

Check your registration status at www.VoteRef.com. Then check those of your friends and family, too. Have you moved states or changed your address? Make sure you aren't still registered in your old state or home.

Then contact your senator and congressman and demand they pass the SAVE America Act to require proof of citizenship and photo ID to vote.

The Bottom Line

We the People have the power to demand fair, transparent elections—starting with who registers to vote. Let's hold our leaders accountable.
