Tim Walz Claims to Have Gone to War - But He Didn't

When his nation called him to service, Tim Walz deserted his soldiers who deployed to Iraq.

To falsely take credit for combat service is shameful and it’s a disgrace that Kamala Harris chose Tim Walz to be her Vice-Presidential candidate. Yet it comes as no surprise because she wants to surround herself with those who share her radical views and beliefs.

Walz recently said he went to war, yet past statements indicate he never served in combat. I have neighbors who have gone to war and didn’t come home. I have friends who are Gold Star families whose loved ones paid the ultimate price for this nation. These are the true heroes and leaders of our nation. Cowards like Tim Walz should never be given any leadership position in this great country after falsely claiming combat service.

Accusations Have Dogged Tim Walz

Some who served with Walz have accused him of betraying his country. Retired Command Sergeants Major Thomas Behrends and Paul Herr wrote an op-ed describing Walz’ military service. According to their article, the only location Walz served outside the United States post 9-11 was in Italy—which is certainly not a theater of combat. In 2003 Walz attended a costly taxpayer funded correspondence course at the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy. He committed to serving two years upon completion of the program. In the spring of 2004, he was selected for promotion to the position of Command Sergeant Major and later that year was put in charge of the 1-125th Field Artillery Battalion. This promotion included a commitment to serve an additional two years upon completion of the academy program. If Walz failed to meet those conditions, it would nullify his promotion.

Behrends and Herr said that in early 2005 the 1-125th Battalion received orders to prepare to mobilize for an active-duty deployment to Iraq. On May 16, 2005, Walz quit and left his soldiers without a leader, failing to complete his obligations of service. He used an excuse that he had to retire to run for Congress. That wasn’t the case, though—he could have been granted permission by the Secretary of Defense, which has happened in other cases. Instead, his soldiers deployed for 22 months to Iraq while he spinelessly remained at home. Three soldiers in that unit died.

Abandoned, Then Insulted

Not only did Walz abandon his soldiers, but he also later insulted the entire National Guard. During the 2020 riots in Minneapolis, the Mayor asked Walz for troops to help with the chaos and violence, but Walz delayed the deployment of the Guard for 3 days. When Walz faced criticism, he said:

I don’t think the mayor knew what he was asking for. I think the mayor said, ‘I request the National Guard, this is great. We’re going to have massively-trained troops.’ No, you’re going to have 19-year-olds who are cooks!

At least the 19-year-olds were willing to show up for duty, unlike Walz. Even cooks are trained for combat.

His stolen valor doesn’t end with his false claims of combat service, his official Governor bio on the state website indicates he retired as a Command Sergeant Major. A false claim since Walz had that rank pulled for failing to meet his obligations. Tim Walz is possibly the worst Vice-Presidential candidate Harris could have chosen.

Vance—the Opposite of Walz

On the contrary, J.D. Vance is a Marine Corps veteran who did serve in combat in Iraq. If elected, Vance would become the first Marine veteran to serve as Vice President. He would also bring great representation to the White House for over 3 million veterans who have served America since 9/11.

President Trump and Vice President Vance would bring a much-needed presence back to the world stage to deter America’s adversaries. When America’s leaders are weak, our enemies will attack. The world is on fire because of a lack of leadership in the White House. We need strong leaders like Trump and Vance, who will stand up to Russia, China, and Iran; otherwise, the world will continue to crumble.
