The Most Extreme Gun Law in The Country: Colorado Dems Seek Full Ban on All Semi-Auto Firearms

Colorado Democrats are closing in on the nation’s most extreme firearm law with a bill that would ban any semi-automatic firearm—unless they pay to “buy back” their gun rights.

A controversial and unconstitutional ban on semi-automatic firearms is moving through the Colorado legislature, and it is unlikely that Democratic Colorado Gov. Jared Polis will veto the measure should It land on his desk.

The bill, SB 25–003, which cleared the Colorado Senate on February 22, would impose the most sweeping ban on firearms in the nation—outlawing simple, everyday firearms under the basis that they can shoot more than one bullet before being reloaded. If the bill clears the Colorado House, Gov. Polis is expected to sign the legislation before it goes into effect in September.

Law-abiding Americans Forced to Buy Back their Rights

Before clearing the Colorado Senate, Democrats amended the bill to allow the purchase of semi-auto firearms if the individual takes a hunter safety course, a firearm safety course, an undefined 12-hour course over two days, applies for a gun buyers license, and undergoes fingerprinting and a background check.

Simply put, the amendment forces gun owners to “buy back” their gun rights, said Second Amendment advocacy group We The Second.

After Senate Republicans requested a fiscal note for the proposed legislation, Democrats estimated it would cost $1.8 million—an extra burden for a state already dealing with a $1 billion budget deficit.

“This atrocious bill spits directly in the face of the Second Amendment, the Heller, McDonald, and Bruen decisions from the Supreme Court, and turns law-abiding citizens into criminals for wanting to purchase commonly owned firearms,” said Second Amendment advocacy group Gun Owners of America (GOA). “Your lawmakers need to hear from you that Colorado doesn’t need more gun control. They should repeal anti-gun legislation instead!”

If the legislation is signed into law, it is likely to fall below constitutional muster due to the landmark Bruen Supreme Court case that declared all firearm laws must be firmly rooted in the historical tradition of firearm regulation in America. Since the ruling in June 2022, Democrat lawmakers have continued to pass restrictive forms of gun control, even citing racist laws from the 1700s that persecuted black Americans and Catholics.

“I think it’s a good reminder of what happens when the Democrats get control,” said Aaron Dorr, policy advisor for Wyoming Gun Owners.

The Worst Gun Control Bill in American History?

SB 25-003 would turn Colorado into a dystopian society where authoritarian policies delete the constitutional rights afforded to law-abiding Americans—after all, they already have numerous restrictive firearm policies that harm everyday citizens.

Everytown for Gun Safety, a radical leftist gun control group, ranks Colorado as the “top 10” for so-called gun violence prevention—even saying that 299,000 lives could be saved over the next decade if every state had laws like Colorado.

How they created that number is unknown and definitely inaccurate, but their endorsement tells Americans all they need to know—Colorado is no friend to gun owners.

Currently, Colorado allows red flag laws or Extreme Risk Protections Orders (ERPOs) which allow civil court to remove Second Amendment rights without evidence—all at the request of any individual who may claim you are a safety violation. Red flag laws look helpful on paper, but they presume the guilt of the gun-owner until such time as they can prove themselves innocent—a direct reversal of the foundation of our system of justice.

Colorado bans high-capacity magazines and "ghost guns," and allows firearms manufacturers to be targeted by lawsuits that aim to burden gun owners. State law bars concealed carry from numerous locations—making self-defense in public virtually impossible.

Colorado residents do not need SB 25-003. They need to repeal the existing constitutional infringements and allow law-abiding Americans to exercise their Second Amendment rights.
