PENNSYLVANIA: Democrats’ Reckless Immigration Policies Led to State Trooper’s Death
Democrats’ immigration policies have claimed yet another innocent American’s life.
For Pennsylvania State Trooper Michael Pahira Jr., July 1 should have been a day like any other. Instead, a routine traffic stop cost him his life.
Illegal alien semi-truck driver Michael Bon swerved off the highway and rammed the truck Pahira had stopped and Pahira's own service vehicle, killing him. Bon was charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless driving.

Pahira was a son, brother, and uncle who loved working on cars, watching documentaries, and cooking for family. He had recently moved back in with his parents to care for his mother as she battled cancer.
Pahira embodied the best of American public service. For nearly 20 years, he served the people of Pennsylvania with distinction as a motor inspector, protecting drivers on some of the country's busiest highways. His tragic death was the direct, preventable result of liberal policies that prioritize mass immigration and lax commercial driver's license (CDL) issuance.
An Entirely Preventable Tragedy
American first responders should be safe to assume that motorists who pass them at routine stops are familiar with American driving laws and culture. One such assumption is that drivers will move over or slow down and pay attention if they see emergency vehicle lights flashing.
That was not the case with Bon, a 33-year-old Haitian national whom the Biden administration paroled into the country. That program should not have existed, Bon should not have overstayed his parole period, and he should not have been given a valid CDL.
Bon entered the United States on July 2, 2024, through the Biden administration's Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela (CHNV) parole program. This program flew in roughly 30,000 migrants per month, totaling over 532,000 entries in the final years of Biden's presidency. Meant as an alternative to illegally crossing the border—which Biden's administration refused to stop—this program granted immigrants a two-year work authorization.
Bon later applied for Temporary Protected Status in October 2024, but it was never granted. In June 2025, the Trump administration terminated the CHNV program and ordered him to leave. Bon ignored the order and remained illegally in Brockton, Massachusetts. Despite his unlawful status, Massachusetts renewed his non-domiciled CDL in February 2026.
Massachusetts is one of multiple Democrat-run states that have fought tooth and nail against the Trump administration's efforts to strengthen oversight of these licenses. The state has frequently failed to properly verify lawful presence, immigration expiration dates, or basic driving competency. It even failed to verify basic English proficiency for commercial drivers to read signs and communicate in emergencies before Trump's second administration.
Fatal large-truck crashes rose sharply as a result, with multiple incidents tied to unqualified operators. Liberal states' resistance to tighter federal standards kept the pipeline of foreign, killer truck drivers open.
Bon's case is a textbook example. He was released into the country by Biden policies, allowed to stay illegally, and licensed by a sanctuary-leaning state that puts inclusivity and labor supply ahead of safety vetting.
The Enduring Cost and Path Forward
Biden's backdoor legal programs, like CHNV parole, created the conditions for Pahira's tragic death.
The good news is that President Donald Trump has revoked Biden's parole programs and reversed course on his other damaging immigration policies. The Department of Transportation is also cracking down on liberal states' irresponsible CDL issuances.
Still, the damage from years of lax immigration and licensing persists.
The grim reality is that more Americans will likely die on interstates from the aftereffects of liberal policies on a country of the United States' size. It will take years to deport the unqualified foreign drivers who are already here and undo the institutional inertia in blue states. And avoidable deaths will likely persist until all illegal alien truck drivers are found and deported.
While Pahira's death was preventable, it need not be in vain. Let it serve as a stark warning of what happens when Americans elect leaders who view mass, unrestricted immigration as an automatic good.
