Leftist Groups Prey on New Citizens. A Judge Just Greenlit That Voter Mining

A district court rules to let activists turn citizenship ceremonies into data-harvesting operations for Democrats.

A liberal judge has issued a ruling that restores the Left's ability to ambush newly naturalized Americans, scrape their personal information, and feed that data into Democrat get-out-the-vote machines. On Aug. 4, U.S. District Court of Maryland Judge Adam Abelson temporarily blocked a United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) rule that barred nongovernmental organizations from conducting voter registration at naturalization ceremonies at the agency's facilities.

USCIS imposed the restriction last August, citing the administrative burden of verifying that third-party groups were truly nonpartisan. Only state and local election officials—already constrained by law from partisan persuasion—would be permitted to handle registration on USCIS property. The policy was a direct response to years of leftist nonprofits like the League of Women Voters (LWV) treating the naturalization process as a voter recruitment drive.

Abelson ignored the documented pattern of how these organizations operate, siding with them in ruling that the ban violated their free-speech rights and was motivated by "discriminatory intent."

Harvesting Data Under the Pretense of Civic Duty

The LWV and other leftist nonprofits who engage in these shameful practices do not simply hand out registration forms and walk away. They are following a pattern they'vve mastered in waging a permanent campaign for the votes of unregistered natural-born and naturalized Americans.

The LWV regularly conducts voter registration drives using tax-free "charitable" donations, often from wealthy Democrat mega-donors. They then target specific demographic groups that have a high propensity to vote for Democrats. Once registered, they collect the personal information of these new voters, which they often use themselves or pass along to other leftist activists. Unsurprisingly, this data often gets into the hands of pro-Democrat political action committees and campaigns for whom these "charities" have already laid the groundwork.

Consider the experience of Veronica, a participant in Restoration of America Foundation's (ROAF) Citizenship Masterclass program. After her naturalization ceremony last year at the USCIS Field Office in Northlake, Georgia, Veronica was handed a flyer on government property by a representative of a liberal nonprofit. The flyer directed her next door to register, where the nonprofit photocopied both her driver's license and her Certificate of Naturalization.

Veronica reasonably assumed the person on USCIS property was official. Instead, she became a data point for a network tied to a coalition of 61 "civic engagement" groups. The goal, however, is not neutral civic participation but targeted mobilization of new voters presumed to lean left.

Nationally, left-leaning nonprofits have funneled billions in tax-deductible grants into "voter education" and "civic participation" that systematically targets likely Democratic voters.

LWV forms one of the Left's most prolific get-out-the-vote brigades for both natural-born and naturalized citizens.

In Virginia, its chapters have pressured high-school students for Social Security numbers without proper consent and shared the information downstream.

In Missouri, it joined other leftist groups to fight a state law designed to stop third-party solicitors from registering non-existent people, the deceased, and even dogs. Paid canvassers kept forms in their cars, turned them in late or not at all, and pre-filled applications with outdated data. The result was both disenfranchisement of real voters and a ready-made mailing list for future partisan contact.

In New York, LWV outright ignored the USCIS directive and worked with local elected officials to solicit naturalized citizens for voter registration on federal property, anyway.

Abelson's ruling treats these groups as neutral public-service providers. USCIS correctly understands they represent the opposite. Once they gain access at the moment of naturalization, the information flows into the same left-wing, activist leviathan that treats new citizens as a captive audience for their pet causes.

Giving New Americans the Respect They Deserve

Newly naturalized U.S. citizens are full Americans. They have completed a rigorous legal process, demonstrated knowledge of the Constitution, and sworn an oath of allegiance. They deserve the same space natural-born citizens receive to form their own political judgments without being immediately funneled into partisan databases. Leftist nonprofits deny them that dignity. By surrounding the ceremony with registration stations, they are implying that citizenship is incomplete until the new American is locked into the Democrat turnout machine.

There is a better way to prepare legal immigrants who want to join the American family and welcome them in once they complete the process.

Naturalization ceremonies should remain civic celebrations, not data-collection events. The USCIS policy recognized this. Unfortunately, this temporary court order undermines the agency's necessary safeguard.
