EXCLUSIVE: FFROA is Helping Legal Immigrants Achieve the Dream—Becoming American Citizens

Vanessa Faura, FFROA

FFROA helps legal immigrants obtain their dream of becoming American citizens.

The Foundation for the Restoration of America (FFROA) helps legal immigrants become citizens by equipping them with the skills and civic knowledge necessary to pass the citizenship test and have a clear understanding of how conservative values and policies shaped America to what it is today–the greatest nation on earth. FFROA's Citizenship Masterclass is free and open to all lawful permanent residents seeking citizenship. The first course, held in June in North Carolina, was a huge success with over 200 participants.

“America welcomes legal immigration—those who come to our country for a better life and follow the rules to earn their citizenship as almost all our ancestors did,” said FFROA founder Doug Truax. “We are happy to be able to provide this important tool to help those folks achieve their dreams.”

FFROA will be conducting the Citizenship Masterclass throughout the United States both in-person and online. The course partners with other organizations to offer top-notch resources such as Q&A sessions with U.S. Customs and Immigration Services officers.

Vanessa Faura is a naturalized citizen who leads the FFROA citizenship project as Director of Programs and Engagement. She and her family legally immigrated to the United States from Peru when she was nine years old. When Vanessa was 18, she became a U.S. citizen and began to immerse herself and study the founding principles of the nation. She believes that "individual freedoms are precious because the larger the government grows, the smaller the individual becomes." Vanessa has also seen firsthand what happens when governments become too powerful, which is "why so many immigrants like me leave our home countries in search of a place where we can be free to create our own destiny."

In 2024 there were over 8 million people eligible for U.S. citizenship, but Faura told Restoration News that many feel overwhelmed by the process and need assistance.

The Citizenship Process

Generally, to become a citizen, one must be a lawful permanent resident who's lived in the United States for at least 5 years; be able to read, write, and speak basic English; and pass a naturalization interview and civics test.

The civics test consists of 10 oral questions from a list of 100, and candidates must correctly answer six to pass. The test includes questions about the Constitution and operations of the federal government such as, "What does the President's cabinet do?" and "Under our Constitution, some powers belong to the states. What is one power of the states?" These are questions that every American should be able to answer—in fact many believe passing the citizenship test should be a requirement to graduate high school. Iowa just passed a law requiring students to pass a civics test aligned with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services' civics exam as a condition to graduate.

Faura said the response to the FFROA course has been overwhelming. They anticipated registrations for the first citizenship class in North Carolina to be around 40 people but ended up with 220 students. The participants were from 11 different Latin American countries.

FFROA conducted an online course in Utah, and they held their final class in-person, celebrating the program’s completion and distributing 41 Citizenship Masterclass Certificates of Completion. The oldest participant was an 85-year-old who passed despite recently suffering a stroke, while the youngest was 18. Faura said it’s important to put a focus on the legal, law-abiding people who follow the proper process to enter our nation legally, like she did. This is what she told Restoration News:

As an immigrant turned American citizen the legal way, standing in the room filled with law-abiding legal immigrants, united by our appreciation of American principles, was inspiring. We left everything behind, drawn by the values that made America the greatest nation on earth. Our love for America's ideals charged the room with passion—that is the heart of our citizenship program. We're not just equipping people with knowledge and confidence to naturalize, but ensuring they embrace and assimilate to the principles that define America.

The next FFROA Citizenship Masterclass will be held in Atlanta, Georgia. For more information follow the  FFROA website for updates.
