A somber-faced Jesus Christ stands in the heart of Washington, D.C., surrounded by the Founding Fathers. A halo of light encircles him, splitting an otherwise dark and gloomy night. In his right hand, he holds the U.S. Constitution. With his left hand, he points to the document as if to say, "Remember this?"
That painting, titled "One Nation Under God," marked artist Jon McNaughton's first foray into the realm of political art. In the 17 years since, the United States has endured much political turmoil, and McNaughton has been there to capture it all.
"My work has reflected the eras of [Presidents] Obama, Trump, Biden, and now Trump again," the Utah-based oil painter told Restoration News.
His decidedly conservative artwork—and, in particular, his depictions of Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump—have led some to label him "America's most controversial artist." That hasn't stopped such prominent figures as Fox News host Sean Hannity and Trump himself from seeking out the artist's originals.
Trump, now one year into his second term, has promised to lead the United States into a new "Golden Age." McNaughton, brush at the ready, says he is optimistic that the glorious "nation under God" he still hopes for may finally be on the horizon.
