Congress Proposes "Dignidad" for Illegal Aliens—Not Americans
Republican Rep. María Salazar's Dignity Act gives amnesty and invites a path to citizenship for current and future lawbreakers.
Rep. María Salazar (R-FL) insists her Dignidad Act is not amnesty. But her bill—which has 19 Republican cosponsors—does exactly that. Additionally, per Salazar's own admission, it opens the door for a future pathway to citizenship for illegal aliens who apply to the bill's program.
Despite being born and raised in the United States, Salazar sometimes struggles with the English language and couldn't even be bothered to title her bill in English.
Nevertheless, she's trying to sell it to Republican voters as a tough, commonsense compromise, touting increased border security coupled with background checks, work requirements, and hefty fees for illegal aliens who want to stay in the U.S. and take part in her illegal status forgiveness program—a.k.a "amnesty."
She sacrilegiously classifies this de facto amnesty as based on the biblical principle of redemption. On her website, she adds, "The Dignity Act is based on the biblical principles of dignity."
But there is no such principle of dignity found in the Bible.
The Bible occasionally uses "dignity" as a synonym for glory and honor. But it also includes it in negative connotations, such as in Ecclesiastes, in reference to pompous folly and, in Habakkuk, to describe the "terrible and dreadful" Chaldeans who invaded Israel.
At no point does the Bible prescribe conferring dignity to others as a precept or practice. This is poorly crafted pseudo-Christianity politically aimed at gullible therapeutic deists.
Conservatives Aren't Buying It
Conservatives see this legislation for what it is—another mass legalization scheme dressed in compassionate rhetoric and a direct betrayal of the 2024 election mandate for mass deportations.
Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) rightly ripped it apart, writing, "Your 'DIGNIDAD Act' would give legal status to over 10 million illegal aliens. It's rank amnesty and everybody knows it. I want dignity for Americans—the people whose interests we represent—not illegal aliens. That means doing what we said we'd do: mass deportations."
Americans did not vote for more bureaucracy and fines. They demanded removal. Salazar's bill delivers the opposite, and she makes no attempt to hide it. She rightly notes the bill does not itself grant citizenship to illegal aliens. In a recent interview, however, she admitted that it sets the stage for a future legislator to do just that.
"At some point in the future, another legislator will write another law to give them path [sic] to citizenship," she said.

Her core claim of "no amnesty" collapses under scrutiny of the bill's own text.
The Dignidad Act grants legal status to anyone present in the U.S. since at least Dec. 31, 2020, who applies to the "Dignity Program." Once an illegal alien files an application, deportation halts.
The bill explicitly prohibits the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) from removing applicants for two years after the enactment of the law. This creates a get-out-of-removal-free card for millions and rewards the very lawbreaking that voters elected Republicans to stop.
Despite Salazar's touting "no citizenship" and "no handouts," the "dignity status" the bill creates lasts seven years and the recipient is eligible for perpetual renewability, making it a de facto green card.
E-Verify is mandated, but real enforcement—actual deportations—is kneecapped by the Dignity Program itself.
Gang members are supposedly ineligible, but only if convicted of a specific offense. The bill's language makes vetting a farce, barring DHS from relying on state and federal databases to prove gang membership.
In a move unrelated to the bill's stated purpose—which serves no goal other than increasing the foreign population—the bill more than doubles per-country immigrant visa caps, exploding legal immigration.
The required fees sound responsible until measured against the $150 billion annual cost of illegal immigration in welfare, Medicaid fraud, education, and emergency care. Coming out of the shadows would allow illegal aliens to earn more and contribute more in taxes. But there is a reason legal immigration is difficult. It's not meant to provide charity to poor foreigners.
This bill does not offer compassion. It offers theft from the American public for the benefit of a foreign class of possible future citizens who broke American laws to live here.
Salazar repeatedly touts the economic benefits of legalizing millions of foreign workers who entered illegally or overstayed their visas. This aims to convince the business community and voters who only care about GDP growth and stock prices.
But emptying poor countries of workers depresses wages and erodes the middle class. It also creates an environment where people can be born and raised in the U.S. without mastering proper English, get elected to Congress, and then pass laws that benefit foreigners at the expense of American citizens. This bill offers dignity to foreign lawbreakers. But it strips Americans of the dignity they deserve in their own country.
