Civilian Tenure Is Out at America’s Military Service Academies—Why It Matters
ROAF founder Doug Truax says the new directive will address a structural problem allowing civilian academic norms to dilute the military's core mission.
For years, Restoration of America Foundation (ROAF) has argued that service academies should be run like military institutions, not civilian universities. Now the Secretary of War agrees.
ROAF founder and West Point graduate Doug Truax commends Secretary of War Pete Hegseth for his recent directive to terminate tenured positions for faculty at the nation’s service academies.
Truax told Restoration News, “For decades our service academies have veered away from their sole purpose—to train and prepare the nation’s military officers how to lead their troops into battle and win wars. We’ve seen military professors pushing divisive social justice agendas that have no place in these institutions. They are a danger to our nation and must be terminated.”
Sec. Hegseth gets it. Military academies cannot operate like civilian universities. “We must address the structural mechanisms that have allowed civilian academic norms to dilute our focus on lethality,” said Hegseth.

Why This Directive Is Necessary
Dr. Morton Ender has been a professor of sociology at the U.S. Military Academy (West Point) for 28 years. Here are some facts about Ender:
- He advocated for transgenders in the military, saying, “Within the military there is still institutional racism, there is institutional sexism, there is institutional homophobia."
- Ender was the point of contact for classes such as "Deconstructing Patriotism" and "The Evolution of Cross-dressing in the Military."
- Research conducted by Ender on West Point cadets about transgenderism concluded that ongoing diversity research and inclusion efforts are needed to avoid silencing sexual and gender minorities.
- He served as co-chair of West Point’s Diversity and Inclusion Studies minor.
Frank Sobchak is the chair of irregular warfare studies at the Modern War Institute at West Point. He is also a professor at the Joint Special Operations University. Here’s some of Sobchack's propaganda:
- In June 2025, Sobchak posted on Facebook that the America First movement is a cult and is "selfish, xenophobic, hateful, cruel."
- In response to a post regarding a day of mourning if President Trump died, Sobchak wrote that he wouldn't be mourning and he has a great bottle of champagne waiting for that day.
- He retweeted a statement calling the Trump White House and RNCC fascists.
- Sobchak wrote an article providing instructions for military members on what-if scenarios if the president were to give unlawful orders, Suggesting he thought Trump would issue unlawful orders.
Lynne Chandler Garcia is an associate professor of political science at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Here are some facts about her:
- She wrote an op-ed in the Washington Post saying she helps her students “identify the structural racism and inequality that has been endemic in American society . . . Racism was ingrained in the system from the beginning, and the military still struggles with these issues.”
- Garcia said, “I teach critical race theories to our nation’s future military leaders because it is vital that cadets understand the history of the racism that has shaped both foreign and domestic policy.”
Why it Matters
These are just small samples of dangerous ideologues that have infiltrated the nation’s military institutions. It’s unclear if Hegseth’s directive covers military war colleges that have also been infected. More on that can be found at RestoretheMilitary.com.
The men and women who enter our service academies are preparing to lead soldiers, sailors, and Marines in the most demanding circumstances imaginable. They deserve an education built around that responsibility. Ending tenure is a meaningful move toward restoring that focus.
