Cash Bail Groups Threaten to Deepen Georgia’s Crime Crisis

Democrats want to spring dangerous criminals from jail.

Georgia is at a crossroads in its fight against violent crime—and Democrats are doing their very best to push the state over its limit by bailing out hardened criminals.

This fall, the 11th Circuit Court will rule on whether the Republican-sponsored law that blocks bail groups from releasing criminals—Senate Bill 63—can move forward. Without SB 63, leftist "advocacy groups" will continue to raise money to bail out criminals—often within hours of arrest.

Crime continues to skyrocket in Georgia and gang violence runs rampant in the streets of Atlanta—making SB 63 more necessary than ever. This fall's courtroom drama will determine whether Georgia will be able to clean up the streets of Atlanta by keeping violent criminals in jail.

Attacks From the Left

Since its passage, SB 63 has faced constant attacks from radical pro-criminal groups.

In early 2025, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), ACLU-Georgia, and the Southern Center for Human Rights filed a class-action lawsuit—Coronell et al. v. Georgia—against SB 63 alleging the legislation violated Georgia State Constitution’s Due Process Clause. The plaintiffs, including a group called Women on the Rise, argue that Fulton County inmates were denied individualized bail determinations.

The plaintiffs contend that the new law will require cash bail for numerous new offenses—many misdemeanors. But that is one of the main intentions of the anti-crime law. SB 63 would require roughly 30 additional offenses require cash bail, including 18 misdemeanors such as criminal trespass and certain failures to appear.

Its intent is simple: keep repeat offenders, gang members, and violent criminals off the streets.

It comes as no surprise that the ACLU, Southern Center for Human Rights, and Women on The Rise would object to an anti-crime measure that curtails gang violence. The ACLU has received funding from George Soros, famous for his pro-criminal district attorneys, the scandalous Ford Foundation, and dark money super network Tides Foundation.

The Southern Center for Human Rights has similar motivations, receiving donations from Soros' Open Society Institute and the major leftist pass-through group Proteus fund. These same groups are involved in numerous leftist campaigns and perniciously sow unrest in the United States.

But the Left has mastered propaganda, painting its initiatives as a defense for the people. In recent years, criminal justice "reform" has become a code term for coddling criminals—and law-abiding citizens always pay the price.

Georgia Can't Handle More Crime

The data does not favor the leftist argument.

The John Jay College of Criminal Justice’s Data Collaborative for Justice reports that 66 percent of individuals released under bail reform, who had a recent prior arrest, were re-arrested within two years of their release.

Between 2019 and 2022, Georgia saw a staggering increase in criminal convictions. In that 3-year span, murder increased by 66 percent, rape increased by 61 percent, and aggravated assault increased by 55 percent.

Georgia can't afford to release criminals.

FBI data also shows a heartbreaking increase in human trafficking during that time period, which rose by an incredible 287 percent for commercial sex acts and 333 percent for involuntary servitude.

Crime plagues the entire state, but Atlanta faces an especially dire crisis. Often called the "Chicago of the South," it ranks among the ten most dangerous cities in America—and lenient cash bail policies make the problem worse.

Georgia Democrats remain fixated on "defund the police" rhetoric and soft-on-crime bail reforms instead of protecting law-abiding citizens. SB 63 represents a critical step toward restoring safety and order.
