VIRGINIA: Abigail Spanberger is a Socialist Aligning Herself with Anti-Israel Radicals

The Virginia Democrat gubernatorial candidate’s plans are eerily similar to those of socialist New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani.

Virginia’s Democratic candidate for governor, Abigail Spanberger, pretends to be a moderate—yet her alliances and platform prove she is a radical. She wants taxpayers to fund housing projects and daycare, and she has aligned herself with the most far-left member of the Virginia legislature.

The Anti-Israel, Anti-Parent Ticket

On June 18, 2025, Spanberger touted her alliance with the Democrat statewide ticket—Ghazala Hashmi and Jay Jones—claiming they are united on the issues and are “one united Democratic ticket.”

An alliance with Hashmi should concern every Virginian. She is one of the most radical members of the state legislature.

In a controversial 2025 vote that ultimately failed, Hashmi supported a bill that would have eliminated a parent’s rights to homeschool their children without government interference. She also voted against a 2022 bill that required schools to notify parents in advance of sexually explicit content used in class.

Hashmi sponsored 2025 legislation that protected doctors who perform illegal abortions and transgender surgeries on minors from extradition to other states to face their crimes. Fortunately, the bill was killed in the finance committee.

Spanberger’s teammate, Hashmi, is also an outspoken pro-Palestinian advocate.

In 2021, Hashmi participated in an anti-Israel and anti-US Navy protest in Richmond. Protestors called for Palestinian liberation and demanded Virginia cut ties with the Israeli government. In 2024, Hashmi defended anti-Israel protestors who set up pro-Palestinian encampments at Virginia Commonwealth University. Hashmi claimed it was “our responsibility to help [students] protest peacefully.”

In the 2025 Virginia legislative session, Hashmi opposed a bill that would have prohibited public universities from accepting grants or having partnerships with countries like Cuba and Iran who are state sponsors of terrorism.

Spanberger has expressed her unity on issues with Hashmi and welcomed her with open arms to her “united Democratic ticket.” Her alliance with one of the most radical politicians in Virginia is disturbing. Despite her attempts to paint herself as a moderate, Spanberger has tipped her hand with her alliance with Hashmi.

Abigail Is a Socialist—not a Moderate

Spanberger’s campaign website reads like the campaign platform of New York Socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani rather than the moderate she claims to be.

Spanberger’s plans will bankrupt the taxpayer and increase reliance on government.

Taxpayer Funded Housing

One of Spanberger’s socialist platforms advocates for more government (taxpayer) funded housing. Specifically, she wants to “increase funding for the Virginia Housing Trust Fund to increase the supply of affordable housing.”  She also wants to make sure “Virginia is a strong partner in tackling the housing supply crisis in communities across the Commonwealth.” In other words, she wants government (taxpayer funded) intervention in the housing market.

Socialist Zohran Mamdani has a similar plan to make New York taxpayers foot the bill for so-called affordable housing. Government control over the housing market should repel anyone who believes in free markets.

Taxpayer Funded Childcare

Spanberger also touts the need for taxpayers to fund childcare. Whether you have children or not, she wants you to pay for babysitters for other people’s children. Her plan is for the government to increase the number of child care centers by repurposing unused commercial space. When she says government, she means the taxpayer. Children already spend 13 years being raised by government schools, now she wants them separated from their parents at an even earlier age.

Spanberger’s plan is in alignment with Mamdani’s socialist platform which also proposes the state provide child-care. So, parents who sacrifice to have one parent stay home to raise their children, rather than be employed, will be forced to fund childcare for others.

Spanberger Won’t Eliminate the Car Tax

Eliminating Virginia’s car tax is a hot button issue voters on both sides of the aisle support. While Spanberger claims she supports efforts to get rid of the tax, she hasn’t provided any details on what steps she will take to make it happen. In fact, the priorities she has outlined in her campaign will increase taxes for Virginians.

Spanberger’s socialist agenda to provide housing and childcare comes with a high price tag that will be passed on to taxpayers. There is no way she’ll be able to eliminate the car tax because that will require cutting expenditures.

Abigail Spanberger has proven by her alliances and candidate platform that she is no moderate. Her socialism will bankrupt Virginia, and voters should reject her Mamdani-style politics.
