A Pro-Abortion Group Just Showed Why We Must Regulate the Deadly Abortion Pill
Pro-life states need the Trump administration's help to protect vulnerable women and unborn children.
No state is safe for the unborn while the abortion drug cartel remains at large, and new data released by the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute proves it.
- Guttmacher's Monthly Abortion Provision Study shows that 98,000 people traveled out of states that restrict abortion at 12 weeks' gestation or earlier to terminate their pregnancies in 2025. That total is significantly lower than the roughly 142,000 telehealth abortions (or drug-induced abortions) that took place in those same states last year.
- A plurality (42,000) of those pill abortions were provided to women in Texas, where abortion is almost completely banned.
- At the same time, Texas saw a decrease in out-of-state abortion travel from 34,000 travelers in 2023 to about 23,000 in 2025.
Guttmacher has been collecting monthly abortion data since 2023. Isaac Maddow-Zimet, Guttmacher data scientist and study lead, says the latest data reveal "a major shift" in locations and methods of abortion access.
- "While travel remains a critical pathway to care, we have seen a decrease in people leaving their state of residence, likely due to both the growth of telehealth access and fewer options for in-person care in the South and Southeast," Maddow-Zimet said in a July 22 press release.
In other words, women who would otherwise be forced to obtain abortions elsewhere are choosing to have unsafe and illegal chemical abortions in their home states instead.
How We Got Here
- The Supreme Court's June 2022 Dobbs decision overturned the federal right to abortion, returning the right to regulate abortion to the states—a move celebrated for restoring the principle of federalism.
- But the Biden administration anticipated that decision—and rewrote the rules. In December 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) lifted a longtime requirement that patients obtain the abortion pill (mifepristone) from a doctor's office.
- The Biden Justice Department also announced that it would not enforce the 1873 Comstock Act, which prohibits the mailing of abortion drugs, by interpreting the federal law to require intent to use the drugs unlawfully.
- The result of these blatantly political moves: greenlighting mail-order abortion for the first time in U.S. history at a huge scale.
Why It Matters
Abortion is skyrocketing, thanks to a black market of abortion pill providers that has sprung up in the wake of the FDA's decision. This abortion drug cartel facilitates illegal abortions across state lines, sparking a silent civil war between pro-life and pro-death states.
- "The report shows no state is truly 'abortion-free' because the abortion pill is so easy to get no matter where you live," said Abby Johnson, founder and CEO of And Then There Were None and ProLove Ministries. "This has been the new frontier of abortion for years and it will continue unless our culture transforms into one that supports women during their unplanned pregnancies, enacts laws that aid parents and families in raising their children, and tells the truth about the absolute horrors of abortion."
The consequences have been deadly.
- Mifepristone causes life-threatening side effects—including hemorrhage, sepsis, bacterial infections, uterine rupture, and death—in roughly 11 percent of cases. At least three women are known to have died from online pills.
- Illegal abortion pill trafficking operations, aided by blue state shield laws, make no effort to verify an individual's identity, sex, pregnancy, general health status, or intended use for the abortion pills before shipping them.
- Forced and coerced abortions are climbing, harming unsuspecting women and their babies across the country.
How We Can Stop It
We need to activate the pro-life majority and tell the FDA to restore the safeguards that Biden abolished.
