Worst Climate Stories of the Week (I’ll See You on the Dark Side of the Moon)
This week’s climate column is inspired by Pink Floyd’s Brain Damage, off the Dark Side of the Moon album. It seems to have a lot of parallels to the Biden administration’s attempts to control the earth’s climate.
And if the cloudbursts thunder in your ear, you shout and no one seems to hear. And if the band you’re in starts playing different tunes, I’ll see you on the dark side of the moon.
The climate stories this week involve brain damage, and not just because the policies and science have lost their moorings to reality. Some scientists now put forth the theory that climate change leads to brain conditions. (They’re likely right, but not in the way they think.) We have a poll showing half of Americans think climate change will destroy the planet in their lifetime. Meanwhile, President Biden had the genius idea of releasing more oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve during an election year. Computer models have done it again—now they tell us China’s cleaner air causes heat waves. A new analysis reveals the global green energy transition will only cost $34 trillion. We have two more exploding EV stories, as the industry continues to circle the drain. And, unfortunately, Gotion has prevailed in its fight to make a small Michigan hamlet build it a billion dollar EV factory.
Dont miss last week’s crazy climate stories: Let’s Get Smart About Climate
In good news, the lunatics from Just Stop Oil will have to compensate victims of their insane protests, and the Dutch government has started rolling back its Net Zero mandates. Also, we have figured out what affects storm cycles—and guess what, it ain’t carbon dioxide. And we get to see an epic viral video of a huge tornado wiping out a wind farm, because nature doesn’t really seem to care about our attempts to save the climate.
Welcome to the machine.
Climate Change Leads to Brain Damage?
A new study by a team of British scientists says changing weather patterns will negatively affect the health of people with brain conditions: “the team emphasise the urgent need to understand the impact of climate change on people with neurological conditions — in order to preserve their health and prevent worsening inequalities.” The team conducted a meta-analysis of 332 academic papers published between 1968 and 2023. The team expects “the scale of the potential effects of climate change on neurological diseases to be substantial.” They found a correlation between daily temperature increases and hospital admissions for things like strokes, dementia, and nervous system infections. That seems to equate weather to climate, but let’s ignore that for now. Finally, we have an explanation for President Biden’s cognitive challenges.
He’s obviously a victim of global warming!
Another Brick In the Wall
A recent poll, conducted by a mattress company . . .
Wait, what?
Apparently, a “green” mattress company conducted a nationwide survey on climate change. 2024 is weird, man. Anyway, they found the results they sought, revealing that 48 percent of Americans “believe they’ll live to see climate change destroy the planet.” Only 33 percent of respondents said the result mattered more than the intent of taking “environmentally friendly actions.” On the other hand, 37 percent said they take “environmentally conscious actions” solely because it helps them feel like a good person.
Maybe buying a green mattress will help them sleep at night.
Wish You Were Here
Once again, as gas prices creep up, and Biden’s poll numbers continue to tank, he’s decided to take action. Once again, that action involves making the United States less energy secure, by releasing another million barrels of gasoline from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Wish that gas were here, instead of not changing gas prices one iota. This time it’s especially ironic, as the gas will be released from the Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve, set up in 2014 in response to disruptions of gas supply due to Hurricane Sandy. Most weather services have predicted an above average year for hurricanes. But that’s none of Biden’s business.
Us and Them
China has taken steps to clean its filthy, smog-ridden air, with some positive results. Now, climate scientists and their computer models tell us that causes heat waves.
If you tweak your model just right, turn your head to the right and squint a little, you can get the results you seek:
In their paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the group describes how they used several climate models and various factors that allowed them to find patterns that might be linked to the reduction of aerosols emitted into the atmosphere by China.
The study inadvertently makes the argument for other factors having greater effects on the climate than carbon dioxide, but we won’t get into that now.
Money, It’s A Gas
The Net Zero transition to a green energy-based economy will only cost the world about $34 trillion. A total bargain:
Governments and companies need to spend an extra $34 trillion on the clean energy transition between now and 2050 to reach net-zero emissions, according to BloombergNEF.
The research group’s 250-page New Energy Outlook report, which crunches 18 million datapoints, says that amount is 19% more than what’s expected in its base case scenario. The finding indicates that sectors from electric vehicles and renewable energy to power grids and carbon capture need extra support.
Exploding In Your Mind
Another week, another couple of stories in which the EV market doesn’t meet expectations. First, this funny image of hundreds of thousands of EVs sitting on docks. Apparently they’re not even bothering to transport them to dealers since there’s no demand:
This probably explains Toyota getting out of the EV market:
Momentary Lapse of Reason
Despite all the EV setbacks, Democrats and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) (but I repeat myself) forge on with this nutty plan to build an EV factory in Michigan. We’ve covered the ongoing saga of Gotion, Inc, a CCP-owned EV battery manufacturer, and its attempts to build a factory in Green Township. The locals rose up to block the plan, but now Gotion has won a court battle. The judge has ordered the town to stop blocking the factory:
Gotion, a China-based manufacturer, was granted a preliminary injunction Friday after arguing that Mecosta County’s Green Township has refused to stick to an agreement made by elected officials who were subsequently removed from office.
Despite that recall last November, a deal still is a deal, Gotion said.
Gotion “has already invested over $24 million into the project by way of real estate acquisition costs and other related fees,” U.S. District Judge Jane Beckering said.
She ordered the township to comply with a previously approved development agreement while the case remains in court.
As the story notes, the court fight continues.
And now for some good climate news . . .
You Shout But No One Seems To Hear
Several large tornadoes hit Iowa and other parts of the Midwest this week, causing significant property damage and killing at least two people. While not making light of the damage caused, we still have to bring you these viral videos to celebrate the schadenfreude of a wind farm destroyed by the wind:
New Dutch Government Follows the Milei Model
Javier Milei, the new president of Argentina, has slashed government spending and gotten inflation under control for the first time in decades. Similarly, Geert Wilders, the new de facto leader of the right-wing coalition government, has begun rolling back that nation’s insane Net Zero goals:
Bravo!
Want to Glue Yourself to the Mona Lisa For the Climate? It’ll Cost Ya
The envirowackos of the group Just Stop Oil have made a real nuisance of themselves over the past couple of years. If they’re not gluing themselves to airport tarmacs to protest the use of “fossil fuels,” they’re tossing tomato soup on priceless works of art in museums. It appears the remaining sane people of the world have had enough of their foolishness:
Bravo!
Climate Change? It’s Not Carbon Dioxide
In the ever-expanding body of evidence disproving CO2 as a major driver of climate change, a new study demonstrates that tropical storm frequency varies due to oceanic cycles that span decades. Human emissions leading to climate change show no link at all to tropical storm frequency or severity. Yet more evidence that the hysterics don’t base their insane claims on anything resembling reality.
