Why the Battle Against Fraud Has Become a Conservative Calling Card

Eliminating fraud and waste in government is not just about good stewardship of the public’s money; it’s about restoring trust in government.

The newly discovered priority of uprooting government-linked fraud throughout America isn’t just another prerogative of the Trump administration—it's a realignment of fiscal conservatism in America.

Earlier this year, the White House established its Task Force to Eliminate Fraud, helmed by Vice President J.D. Vance. This followed multiple high-profile examples of government fraud exposed by independent journalists, including a major case of child care fraud in Minnesota. In May, Vance hosted a roundtable of state Attorneys General discussing how the administration can better combat fraud across the nation.

The movement against fraud is not an accident. Trust in institutions in 2026 is at an all-time low. Americans watch Congress pass trillion-dollar initiatives, from military stimulus to economic relief and infrastructure development, that the public does not broadly feel it benefits from. But they do feel the cost of these programs. Americans rightly point to the bloat in federal spending that gets wasted by the government's endless red tape.

The fight against fraud is a continuation of efforts to ensure that the money provided to the federal government by the American people is used correctly and efficiently. It is also an attempt to rebuild trust in institutions—trust that is necessary if the American republic will continue.

Citizen Journalism at Its Best

In December 2025, investigative YouTuber Nick Shirley exposed a major childcare fraud scheme in Minneapolis connected with the Minnesota government. The video quickly garnered millions of views and major media attention, kicking off 2026 with a focus on fraud.

Soon after Shirley’s exposé, investigations expanded into other areas of fraud, particularly involving Medicaid. States soon launched investigations into potential fraud and found major issues with how Medicaid is billed for autism therapy.

The prominence of fraud as a leading political issue is also a sign of major political realignment. Today, many conservatives are rightly concerned about the performance of government. The issue is not simply more or less government, but efficient or inefficient government. The fight against fraud is an important sign that conservatives are choosing efficiency over the status quo. Americans may disagree on the size and scope of government, but all are united that the money they pay every April 15th should be used for its stated purpose and not wasted.

With Vice President Vance’s Task Force in full swing, the fight against fraud is beginning to scale. The tangible results of bringing accountability to taxpayer dollars will forge a newfound trust in American institutions. A newfound trust that will be important is reviving a belief that the federal government is working again in our nation’s best interests at home. Every successful investigation into government fraud and subsequent remedy will regain a small portion of that lost trust from years of delayed infrastructure developments, inept disaster response, and exorbitant pet projects.

The fight against fraud is an important one. It will decide whether or not the next generation trusts the people spending their hard-earned money.
