We Must Vote NO on Virginia's Unfair Election Redistricting Referendum This April
Democrats are trying to destroy congressional representation in the commonwealth by redrawing Virginia's maps in their favor.
Truer words have not been framed, but the threat is much closer to home. The threat is coming from the Virginia State Legislature and its unfair redistricting plan set to be voted on as a referendum on April 21, 2026. I am writing to appeal to reason, to fairness, and I hope, the free and fair minds of my fellow Virginians, both Republicans and Democrats. The measure being taken by the legislature to disenfranchise nearly half the state is unfair and wrong. We need to take a stand against this redistricting measure and vote NO on the ballot.
Redistricting is supposed to happen every 10 years after the nationwide census has been completed. The whole purpose for redistricting is to ensure equal and fair representation among the districts in each state, and to reassign districts if population in a state has significantly increased or decreased, such that the state obtains or loses a representative in the House of Representatives. The last redistricting in Virginia took place in December 2021, after the 2020 census, and is not supposed to happen again until after the 2030 census, likely again in December 2031. According, this redistricting plan is five years early.
Even more significant is that there is no apparent need to redistrict in Virginia. The current Virginian district maps, which were drawn by a bipartisan commission, represent Virginians quite fairly. Roughly 56 percent of Virginians reported voting Democrat and 44 percent of Virginians were reported as voting Republican.
Virginia has 11 congressional districts. Six of those districts are represented by Democrats and five are represented by Republicans. This means that Virginia has a representative percentage of roughly 55 percent Democrat and 45 percent Republican. That is as fair as you can make it under Virginia's current congressional allotment. If the current makeup of the congressional districts in Virginia already fairly and accurately represents the interests of Virginians, then how does redistricting protect the interest of Virginian voters? It does not.
False Arguments...
Supporters of the referendum argue that because other states are engaging in political gerrymandering, Virginia is also justified in political gerrymandering. For the sake of argument, without addressing the merits of their claim, let us assume that unfair political gerrymandering is taking place elsewhere.
Does unfair and immoral conduct on one party ever justify unfair and immoral conduct on another? Of course not. We all know that two wrongs do not make a right. Engaging in immoral and unfair practices only hurts one's own integrity.
Just because other states are allegedly engaging in immoral and unfair conduct does not justify nor support Virginia also engaging in like conduct and losing her integrity. To do so goes against our very motto and stand against tyranny—"Sic semper Tyrannis." Depriving nearly half the state a voice in Congress is an act of tyranny, and we as Virginians must stand against it.
...and Fallacies
The referendum supporters' whole premise of the bill is based on a logical fallacy. They support the bill by saying that political gerrymandering in other states dilutes the representation of Virginians. However, let us consider the fallacy of their logic.
State A redistricts its congressional districts to diminish or remove the voice of Group 1 in that state, to the benefit of Group 2; accordingly, State B redistricts its congressional districts to diminish or remove the voice of Group 3 to the benefit of Group 4.
Has Group 1 been vindicated by the actions of State B by giving Group 4 a greater voice? Are the interests of Group 3 represented by the interests of Group 2? No!
The representatives from State A represent the people and interests of State A, not State B. Group 2, the group of people allegedly benefitted in State A, are not the same as Group 3, the group of people being disenfranchised in State B. At the end of the day, both Groups 1 and 3 have been unfairly treated and made voiceless. The actions of State B did not vindicate Group 1, it disenfranchised Group 3. Accordingly, the actions of State B did greater harm by ensuring that two distinct groups become voiceless. No matter how you cut it, disenfranchising the people in State B is unfair and indefensible.
If Virginians want to send a Republican to Washington, it is their right to choose the Republican they want to send. No two representatives are exactly the same in temperament, interest, integrity, or even political platform. One representative has a greater interest in farming where another has a greater interest in energy. It is the rights of the Virginians, if they want a Republican representative, to choose which Republican they want to represent them in the primaries, and then to vote for them in the general election. Virginians have no choice of representatives in other states' primaries or other states' general elections.
The Republicans being voted for in these other states may very well be rejected in Virginia because these other representatives do not represent Virginian issues, values, or concerns. Likewise, other states allegedly disenfranchising Democrat voters is not vindicated by Virginia sending more Democrats to Washington. Democrat representatives in Virginia, for the same reasons listed above, do not represent the interests of the Democrats in other states, nor should we, as Virginians, want them to. So, the referendum seeking to disenfranchise Virginia Republicans does nothing to balance any alleged wrong doing going on elsewhere.
Who Benefits?
Furthermore, this measure does not solely affect Virginian Republicans. It affects rural Virginians. To accomplish the desired result, the legislature has divided up rural Virginian districts with urban Virginian districts. Urban Virginia therefore will be given a greater voice in the federal government than rural Virginia. Urban Virginia does not share the same needs and concerns as rural Virginia, regardless of party affiliation. So, instead of increasing Virginians' voices, as the measure is allegedly supposed to do, rural Virginians are losing a voice.
Moreover, it is not solely so-called "Republican States" that are redistricting. So-called "Democrat states" are also engaging in immoral political gerrymandering redistricting to deprive Republican votes, including California, Maryland, and Washington.
If other states wish to engage in immoral and unfair gerrymandering conduct, so be it. The sin be on their own heads. Virginia must stand up against such unfair behavior and be a beacon of reason and fairness.
In sum, representatives from other states, whether Republican or Democrat, represent the interests of those other states. Not Virginians. This referendum to redistrict is unfair, indefensible, and not representative of Virginians' interests. Vote NO on April 21, 2026.
