POLL: North Carolina Seniors Overwhelmingly Believe Trump, Not Harris, Will Defend Social Security and Medicare
Support for Social Security, Medicare, and caregivers viewed as critical factors in 2024 race
Donald Trump maintains a clear lead over Vice President Kamala Harris in North Carolina despite the allegations made against the Republican gubernatorial candidate in the Tarheel State, according to fresh polling from AARP.
The just released survey shows Trump ahead of Harris in North Carolina by a margin of 48% to 46%. Among voters age 50+, Trump leads Harris by 9 points.
Trump’s pledge to protect benefits such as Social Security and Medicare for retirees could be a key factor. If so, North Carolina’s senior citizens stand poised to provide Trump with the margin he needs for victory. That’s because older voters typically comprise more than half of state’s electorate, according to AARP.
When asked if they would be more or less likely to vote for a candidate who would ensure that workers get the Social Security “they paid into through a lifetime of hard work,” 94% of voters ages 50 and older said they would be more likely. Those same voters were also asked if they more or less likely to vote for a candidate would protect Social Security from cuts that would be used to reduce the nation’s debt with 78% saying that would be more likely. Overall, 84% of the state’s seniors said Social Security would be an important factor in determining how they vote while 78% said Medicare would be a determining factor in how they vote.

Policies that are designed to help seniors as they age also figured into the polling results with 78% of voters who are 50 and older saying they would be more likely to vote for candidate willing to assist family caregivers who are helping loved ones live independently in their homes. The poll also showed seniors supporting paid family live and tax credits for caregivers by substantial margins.
The survey results indicate Trump is “narrowly ahead” of Harris on issues that are important to seniors. However, Harris does have what AARP describes as a “double-digit” lead among voters who are 18–34. Both candidates have a solid lock with voters in their party with “independents narrowly tilting toward Trump.” Both candidates are beset with gender gaps in the state with Harris holding a 7-point lead among women and Trump holding 11-point lead among men. Race is also a factor. Trump is winning 66% of white overs who are 50 and over but has just 4% of black voters in that same age group. Harris has support among 30% of white voters who are 50 and over and 92% of support from black voters who are 50 and older.
Trump’s overall advantage over Harris appears to grow in a head-to-head matchup that excludes other candidates on the ballot with the former president winning 50% of the North Carolina vote versus 47% for Harris.
