Only American Citizens Should Decide American Elections—Pass the SAVE America Act Now
Non-citizen voting threatens sovereignty. This bill is the essential firewall.
The bedrock of self-government is simple—only citizens may vote. Yet without the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE America Act) that principle is under siege. Mass illegal immigration and lax state registration systems have created conditions for non-citizens to influence federal elections. This bill is the bare minimum required to preserve American democracy.
The SAVE America Act accomplishes three core things for election integrity.
It requires documentary proof of U.S. citizenship such as a passport, birth certificate, or other REAL ID-compliant document, when registering to vote in federal elections. It mandates photo ID at the polls. It also forces states to share voter rolls with the Department of Homeland Security for citizenship cross-checks.
These commonsense steps close loopholes that currently allow non-citizens to register and cast ballots with little risk of detection.
That's what most of the world requires to vote. The U.S. is an exception in its dangerous carelessness—but not because Americans themselves are careless. In fact, 83 percent of Americans support requiring a photo ID to vote, according to a Pew Research Center poll.
Requiring proof of citizenship to vote isn’t just about ensuring fair elections. It’s also a safeguard for self-government. Governments elected by a minority of eligible voters suffer from lack of legitimacy. When citizens boycott elections either through apathy or mistrust, civil unrest usually follows because few recognize the government as representing the people.
That’s why it’s crucial Republicans do everything they can to pass the SAVE America Act. They currently do not have 60 Senate votes to invoke cloture, and they don't expect to have 60 votes after the midterms either. Only by forcing a talking filibuster can they shine a light on Democrats’ opposition to a policy most of their own voters' support. This will not only galvanize voters against them, but it will eventually force them to cave, allowing the bill to pass.
The SAVE America Act is not a niche proposal that Republicans promised to a fringe interest group. It represents a policy supported not only by nearly all Republicans, but by an overwhelming majority of Americans of all political backgrounds. It’s time to get this bill passed and deliver one of Republicans’ core promises to the American people—fair and transparent elections.
