John Thune Must Fight for a Talking Filibuster on the SAVE America Act
Why does Senate leadership prefer donor appeals over a real floor fight for election integrity?
Sen. Majority Leader John Thune and other GOP establishment senators claim to champion election security through the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE America Act).
Their actions so far betray that claim.
By insisting a talking filibuster will never work—that Democrats will give up trying to talk the bill to death—many Republican senators are throwing up their hands in faux desperation, hoping Republican voters will donate to them. The problem is that even if Republicans have their best midterm election ever, they will still not have 60 Republican senators after November… which puts the country right back where it is now.
Unless Republicans are willing to nuke the filibuster—which they should never consider—they cannot pass the SAVE America Act without seven Democrats or without Democrats giving up the floor due to exhaustion.
With the Senate back in session, the decision to let Democrats veto the Save America Act without a floor fight through the talking filibuster ultimately depends on priorities. President Donald Trump correctly said this bill takes precedence over all else and even threatened not to sign anything else until this gets passed. Republican senators should take the same attitude.
Voters are fed up with Republicans claiming to support their priorities, performatively failing, and then going home to ask for more money. Requiring photo ID at the polls is a top priority for every Republican voter and is one of the few issues on which most rank-and-file Democratic voters agree with Republicans.
Forcing a talking filibuster is a win-win for Republicans because it will put on full display how Democratic senators are willing to hold the Senate hostage to defend corrupt voting. Having the public on its side on this issue isn’t enough. Republicans must activate voter anger at Democratic senators for fighting against election integrity.
Forcing them to the mat on this issue is necessary to illuminate their corruption and pass this bill.
