Democrats Seem Afraid ICE Will Scare Away Their Illegal Aliens
The city of Denver and left-wing groups are suing to keep immigration agents away from polling places.
Democrats are throwing a tantrum over the possibility that the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at polling places could make them lose elections. On September 10, the city of Denver and leftist groups, including the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), UnidosUS—formerly La Raza, and Common Cause, sued the Trump administration in D.C. federal court to block armed ICE agents from voting sites.
During his confirmation hearing, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin sounded almost shocked by Democrats' opposition to ICE agents at polling places. "I don't understand what the concern about enforcing immigration at polling places is anyways," he said. "Because, honestly, if you're not a citizen, you shouldn't be voting anyways."
Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, in a release by the plaintiffs, stated: "Stationing ICE agents near polling places is only meant to scare people and suppress votes." He's not entirely wrong. Stationing ICE agents at polling places would suppress noncitizens' illegal votes—a great idea if ICE didn't have better things to do. But, as the Washington Post reports, Mullin has said, the only reason ICE would have to go near a polling place is if there is a threat or they are serving a warrant. If ICE's presence "scares" someone away from a polling place, the relevant question is why that person was there in the first place.
The lawsuit claims that the presence of ICE agents could prevent voters from returning their ballots, disrupt judges and election staff, and keep clerks from collecting those ballots. This shows Democrats have no interest in beating the allegations that they rely on noncitizens to administer and win elections. Compounding the irony, the Colorado Sun article notes most of the state’s voters cast their ballots by mail. The lawsuit could not even cite cases of ICE agents engaging in operations at polling places in Colorado and grasped at straws from cases in Texas, California, and New York.
Democrats Need the Myth That ICE Poses a Threat to American Citizens
This lawsuit would be hilarious if it weren't so sad. The plaintiffs dressed it up as a defense of a Civil War-era statute that bars "troops or armed men" at elections except to "repel armed enemies of the United States." Local police and sheriff's deputies—armed, uniformed, and paid by taxpayers—stand near polling places every election. Nobody files suit in Washington calling these armed officers an occupying army. ICE agents are simply federal law-enforcement agents doing the job Congress assigned them.
When Johnston accuses ICE of scaring away voters, he is not openly admitting to relying on illegal aliens' votes to win elections. He is referring to the legal votes of Democrats who have bought into the propaganda about ICE. The Left has spent years teaching the Democratic coalition that ICE is an enemy of all immigrants—even naturalized ones. Worse, they've even smeared ICE agents as neo-Nazis—who, as the lawsuit puts it, use "racial profiling" to "unlawfully" detain and possibly assault citizens.
This is extremely dangerous not only for the ICE agents their propaganda affects but for the country. Democrats generally don't care, though, because fear motivates voters, and since Democrats' policies are immensely unpopular, fearmongering is their standard fallback.
The Denver lawsuit is the latest installment of the Left's attack on immigration enforcement. It asks a judge to treat federal agents as a standing army that poses a threat to law-abiding American citizens exercising their right to vote. If the threat of ICE agents keeps noncitizens away from the polls, it will only make American elections more secure. Democrats know that because of their unhinged anti-ICE propaganda, ICE presence will keep many of their legal voters away too.
