Commentary: Democrat Senator Claims MAGA Legitimizes Political Violence. What A Joke.

Democrats spent years ignoring, excusing, and winking at political violence.

Connecticut’s far-left Democrat Senator Chris Murphy took to X to pin the assassination of a Minnesota legislator and attempted murder of another on a “hate-filled right winger.” This despite the investigation being less than 24 hours old at that point. Not one to let a tragedy go to waste, Murphy used it to smear the MAGA movement as having somehow legitimized political violence. Despite a token reference to Republicans being targets of political violence, he insists it isn’t a “both sides” issue.

Murphy is wrong. Since the Donald Trump era began a decade ago, Democrats have either turned a blind eye or lied about violence tied to their political goals and allies.

Anti-ICE Actions Featured Violence

The Los Angeles-centered protests of federal law enforcement daring to enforce immigration law featured vandalism and “violent confrontations with officers” on their first day.  The next day, President Trump called up the National Guard to protect federal property, but California Democrats like Gov. Gavin Newsom had the gall to accuse the President of "inciting and provoking violence." This is rich coming from the party who embraced the 2020 protests to defund and disarm the police that even The New York Times admits sometimes “devolved into destructive riots.”

Since the October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel, this country’s college campuses have become what National Review called a daily “Charlottesville” for Jewish students, referencing the infamous 2017 white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, VA that killed a young woman. While that event was widely disavowed by Republicans including President Trump (despite Democrats’ attempts to rewrite history), the campus “protests” have received a pass from the left, epitomized by its tolerance of the violence and chaos at Columbia University.

Following the April 2024 storming and occupation of Columbia University's Hamilton Hall that included trapping school employees in the building (or “held hostage,” if you will), Manhattan’s Democrat DA Alvin Bragg dropped criminal charges against more than 2/3 of the perpetrators. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D) visited and supported an anti-Israel encampment at Columbia, where protesters shouted “October 7th is going to be every day for you.”

This prompted warnings that Jewish students should leave the campus for their safety. Additionally, Columbia has the approval of genocidal terrorist group Hamas, which used images of the “protests” to taunt their hostages.

Republicans Face More Harassment

Democrats have also endorsed harassing prominent Republicans. The liberal Brennan Center for Justice found larger shares of Republicans than Democrat lawmakers reported “increases in the severity of abuse since first taking public office.”

Rep. Maxine Waters called on her supporters to “get out and you create a crowd. And you push back on them. And you tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere,” if they came across any members of the Trump administration. New York’s Democrat Senator Chuck Schumer in 2020 promised Supreme Court Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh will “pay the price” if they “go forward with these awful decisions” to rule against abortion rights; two years later, a man armed with a pistol and knife was arrested near Kavanaugh’s home and charged with attempted murder, motivated by the leaked draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade.

This tolerance for harassment, as well as constant hyperbolic comparisons to Trump and Republicans to Nazis and dictators, allows deranged individuals an excuse to justify their violence. Case in point: Police found a pipe bomb at the home of a protestor arrested at one of the recent “No Kings” protests.

Democrats Put Their Votes Where Their Mouths Are

Democrats’ tolerance of violence supporting their causes is backed up by their votes in Congress.

In 2024, 61 Democrats voted against a resolution condemning the Defund the Police protests which led to the deadliest year for law enforcement on record and increased danger to officers charged with upholding the law. The resolution also honored the fallen police officers and expressed condolences to their families.

Just this month, 113 Democrats voted against a resolution condemning the antisemitic terrorist attack on demonstrators in Colorado—including a Holocaust survivor—peacefully showing their support for the hostages still held by Hamas. The resolution noted the perpetrator was in the country illegally and shouted “Free Palestine” during his Molotov firebombing spree, all issues which Democrats have supported and encouraged in recent years.

Following the October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel, Rep. Rashida Tlaib described Hamas’ atrocities including rapes, murders, and kidnappings (which included Americans) as justified “resistance” to the Israeli “apartheid state.”  184 Democrats voted against the resolution to censure Tlaib for these remarks, with another 3 merely voting “present.”

Following months of violence and vandalism directed at pro-life centers, groups, and churches following the end of Roe v. Wade, 209 Democrats voted against condemning this conduct. The resolution did not ask Democrats to disavow their pro-abortion views but only recognize “the sanctity of life.” Their failure to recognize the value of a human life is astonishing but unsurprising given the party’s recent history.

Sen. Murphy—No Better than Rep. Rashida Tlaib

Senator Murphy is dumb, ignorant, or both to suggest MAGA Republicans are normalizing political violence. In just the past few months, Murphy’s colleague in the Senate, Democrat Elizabeth Warren’s first reaction to the murder of a health care CEO was not outrage at the violence or sympathy for the victim, but validating the motive. A recent study notes an “assassination culture” is developing on the left. Democrats have long adored the 1960s for the party’s political dominance that decade, but the time period was famously turbulent—1968 alone featured the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr., Robert Kennedy, and violence at the Democratic National Convention. Democrats have been soul-searching since their crushing losses in November but it appears they’re taking the wrong lessons from 1968.
