Border Security Officers Have Tough Jobs: Keeping Us Safe and Upholding the Rule of Law
The job of America’s border security officers is tougher than ever. The burden is overwhelming them.
The average U.S. Immigration and Customs (ICE) officer has to contend with a docket of 7,000 cases of illegal immigrants who have crossed the border. That works out to 19 per day—and the existing 7.4 million total cases will likely surpass 8 million by this fall. That’s on top of the 1.9 million “gotaways” ICE has been unable to track down.
Border security officers are overwhelmed. All because President Joe Biden has allowed millions of immigrants to enter the country since he took office.
The average American knows the border is a mess. That’s why they consistently tell pollsters it’s one of the top issues facing the country. That’s also why Biden is suddenly trying to appear tough on immigration by cracking down on asylum seekers who cross the border illegally. We know what Biden really believes. He campaigned against the same policy in 2020. It was one of many Trump policies that he reversed upon entering office.

Common sense tells us that Biden only cares about looking tough, not helping ICE agents secure the border. He only shuts down asylum claims once they reach 2,500 per day (still over 900,000 asylum seekers a year). He also recently announced a new “Parole in Place” amnesty plan for 500,000 immigrants who crossed the border illegally and married U.S. citizens. And all of that is on top of a pilot program to hand out 10,000 ID cards to illegal immigrants. This will allow holders to get past TSA screenings in airports and fly around the country unencumbered. You know, something that a foreign national who entered the country legally could do with a passport.
Once these card-carrying immigrants land where they want, having a government ID will come in handy for Medicaid, cash payments, and other taxpayer-funded assistance. According to a report from the House Budget Committee, illegal immigrants cost taxpayers $42 billion a year in welfare, and an additional $68 billion on education.
That doesn’t include the drain on law enforcement or the human toll of violent crime perpetrated against American citizens. Illegal immigrants who have been caught and allowed to remain often commit preventable crimes, like the murder of 22-year-old nursing student Laken Riley.
We’re all human, regardless of nationality and legal status. But Americans’ incomes are being badly stretched. We cannot afford to hand out tens of billions of dollars in public assistance. We need those dollars for groceries, gas, and the air conditioning bill – and to pay ICE officers to protect our border.
Unfortunately, those officers are overwhelmed. But that’s fine with President Biden—he has an election to win.
