Abigail Spanberger Backed Biden's Open Borders. Now Virginians are Paying the Price.
Democrats’ nominee for Governor cares more about protecting illegal aliens than Virginians.
Former Rep. Abigail Spanberger calls herself a "bipartisan" lawmaker willing to break with her party to “get things done”—or at least to win the tight Virginia governor's race this November. This same "bipartisan" lawmaker voted with Democratic leaders over 90% of the time, was complicit in enabling the Biden border crisis, and failed to lead on an issue most Americans support—securing our nation's border.
Spanberger was elected to Congress in 2018 and quickly emerged as a partisan foot soldier against President Donald Trump’s America First immigration policies. During a roundtable meeting discussing California’s sanctuary state laws, Trump referred to ultra-violent MS-13 gang members as “animals” after they were caught and deported for committing heinous crimes, including entering the U.S. illegally. Spanberger blasted the comments as “bigotry” and rallied supporters against the administration to defend murderous gang members. She took to social media accusing the President of using illegal immigrants as “political pawns” and called the detention of illegal migrants and their children “unthinkably cruel.”
Throughout her congressional tenure, Spanberger voted for legislation that directly prohibited removal proceedings for undocumented immigrants and co-sponsored a bill that imposed limitations on the President’s ability to ban illegal aliens from entering the United States. In February 2019, Spanberger voted to terminate the national emergency declaration related to the migrant invasion on the U.S.-Mexico border and subsequently voted to override Trump’s veto of the resolution.
The veto override failed, allowing the national emergency to remain in place until it was rescinded mere minutes after President Joe Biden’s inauguration on January 20, 2021.
The Spanberger-Biden Border Crisis Comes to Virginia
Spanberger offered little resolve to the border crisis as the Biden administration rolled back Trump-era immigration policies. In 2023, Spanberger slammed the Republican Secure the Border Act as a “partisan proposal” voting against the bill which provided funding for border wall construction, expanded detention centers, required citizenship verification for employment, and limited asylum eligibility. In 2024, Spanberger doubled down, rejecting legislation that would cut federal funding to sanctuary cities and voted against the bipartisan Laken Riley Act, that required the detention of illegal immigrants who are arrested or charged with certain crimes, including ones resulting in causality.
Moreover, Spanberger endorsed failed border czar, Kamala Harris for President and refused to support a resolution that condemned the Biden-Harris administration for its open border policies. As a result, Spanberger voted against the overburdened law enforcement and Border Patrol officers she took an oath to protect. Meanwhile, Virginians under the leadership of Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin and Lt. Governor Winsome Sears have seen over 500 arrests of illegal immigrants—including 132 identified as gang members of MS-13 and Tren de Aragua.
The Youngkin-Sears administration has issued executive orders directing state law enforcement agencies to work with the new Trump administration on removing illegal public safety threats from the commonwealth—an expectation Virginia voters have, and one Abigail Spanberger will never meet.
